 depressed and gaining weight
Author: Jeanetta

I have been really depressed lately, we moved this summer about 14 hours away from family and I miss them horribly. It hasn't been bad until Thanksgiving then I started to get homesick for them. Problem is that I have been eating like mad since then! Everything and anything, I don't want it, I'm not hungry (I am eating too much to ever get hungry), and I know it won't make me feel better (as a matter of fact worse -both mentally and physically) but I somehow hope it will. I used to get a good feeling from eating, now I don't but I think I am still searching for it. I have only exercised once or twice since then as well - I used to do it everyday and look forward to it. Now I can't convince myself to do it at all. Any suggestions? Should I just try to control myself for now and start over after the holidays or what? I have finished off all of hubby and kids dessert stuff, and anything else fattening to eat and I don't plan on buying anymore so perhaps if I overeat on not bad stuff I will be okay for now? Ugh, how do I stop this cycle? I feel so out of control, unhappy, and depressed. I felt good when I was eating good and exercising but I can't seem to get back to it :(

ABSOLUTELY NOT! We've all used the "after the holidays" excuse--it is so damn lame!

You are taking your frustrations out on your body--you might as well put the fork down and repeatedly bash yourself over the head with a 2x4! Same darn thing! Now, what will that do to change the situation?

You should NOT "overeat" on "not so bad" stuff.

Don't get me wrong, I know you really are sad about being away from family--but I can't help but think that you are stretching the "away from family" excuse to give yourself a license to "let loose" for the holidays.

You've removed a substantial amount of weight! What an incredible feat! But the old "overeating monster" is still lurking deep within and has a WONDERFUL excuse to come back and bite you in the arse! Don't let this happen! You've come so far to slack off now!

Tell the "monster" to BACK OFF, drink a GIANT drink of water, get on your exercise gear, lace up your sneakers and start exercising--RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW!

The holidays will come and go, your emotions over missing your family will be strong, but adding to your unhappiness by overeating and becoming a slug over the holidays is NOT the answer.

Remember--you're venting to a "fatty" here! Nice try--but I'm not buying it at all!

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Maybe you just want to take it one day at a time? Tell youself "just for today I am going to eat well and exercise". Just get through today, then try it again tomorrow. You need to build some successes again, regain the confidence in yourself that you CAN do this!
I have been having a difficult time as well, last week was a nutritional nightmare! But my husband and I made a deal that if I have 15 consecutive "good" days (eating less than a certain amount of calories and exercising) he'll suprise me with something special (NOT food related). It's helped me to get back on track, I've had 2 great days, 13 more to go.
Good luck, and know that you CAN do this!

Hey Jeanetta. You have lost so much weight and I know that makes you feel very good. Please don't go back to your old ways. Me and my wife are in the same boat. My family lives in Kentucky and my wifes family lives in Alabama and we're in Tennessee. It gets tough around the holidays. But we have each other to pull us through. And that gets us through. Just remember how far you've come and where you'll be once you've lost all the weight and that will get you through. You have a great day.

Many people make the same mistake of eating because of emotional distress like you mentioned, so you need to find a non-food distraction to occupy yourself at those times when you feel the urge to eat of out of depression, work on a hobby, do a crossword puzzle, play a video game, something that will take your mind off of things till you can get your emotions under control enough to not eat just because of emotions, once you break the habit habit of emotional impulse eating it will be easier to resist eating just because of emotions.

Hi Jeanetta,

Looks like you are sabotaging yourself. Is there a deep reason why? It usually happens when there is some kind of a mental conflict, when your unconcious feelings are not in harmony with your logical thinking.

How do you feel about your goal weight? Can you really imagine yourself being 140 lbs? Do you have any issues with that? Do you feel like being thin is not really worth it? Are you just sick of being on a "diet"? Are you afraid of failure? Are you afraid of success?

Be honest with yourself. I think the problem is deeper than being homesick. Confront your true feelings, know yourself and what you want, and act in harmony with what you really want.

Melanie

I just wanted to say thank you for all of your comments, they all made me do a lot of thinking, and I have been eating better the last few days (still no exercise other than shoveling snow - which hubby keeps thanking me for LOL). One day at a time.
