Ok i have seen some recent posts of losing weight from changing the bodies acidity levels and from a naturopath who claims all over the counter drugs are the root of all evil - god forbid i have a friggen panadol....so you want to lose weight without the gimmick...then LISTEN UP
1) Weight loss is calories in VS calories out....that is you have to find out how many calories your body requires to maintain its current weight (you can do this on this site)....if you subtract 500 from that number each day your aiming for a loss of 1 pound per week...again its cals ingested vs cals used.
2) break up these calories over the course of the day into 5 or 6 smaller meals...this gets your metabolism going and makes the weight loss process easier
3) exercise....cardio is best kept to around 20 mins and is done at intervals....that is, 30 second sprint, 1minute jog, 30 second sprint etc etc...you can vary this to your fitness level and it can apply to most exercises like running, swimming, even boxing....u need to do some weight training people....most here are female so forget about packing on tonnes of muscle because IT JUST DOESNT HAPPEN - your body carries little testosterone and you need to eat 1gm of protein per pound of body weight for muscle to grow (you will make some minor initial muscle gains but they are going to be minimal)...most of you im sure would not eat that much protein.
4) drink lots of water...i live in Australia, and we have something called cordial and i think its the same as your diet kool aid or crystal lite or something...i personally drink that because it yield little calories and beats boring old water
5) to make the weight loss journey succesfull have a cheat day - a day where you can have that dinner you have been craving or that candy bar...dont go overboard but dont feel guilty either, cheat days keep us sane - plus if the body realises 'hey we r getting some junk food every so often still, we can afford to lose some pounds for this person because i know i will get some junk food again soon'...yes the body really is that intelligent.
This is the basics on how to lose weight. Do this and your gaurenteed results. Forget the hoopla of 'ph nutralizing acid supplements' or 'over the counter drugs will endanger your life' (really what do you expect from a naturopath?)....it is that simple!!!.....so make a habit of recording what u eat (you can do this online at fitday.com or just write it down) and make sure your eating less than what your body requires to maintain your current weight....pretty soon you wont have to calorie count anymore because you will know what food contain x amount of calories.
Now thats all there is to it in a nutshell...so get busy people!!

What you say Gymmachine is basically what most of us know way at the back of our mind....It`s no quick fixes, it`s not easy but the end results are real and easier to keep.

I am confused about one thing. I realise that there is no magic formula - losing weight is simply consuming fewer calories than you burn. But, I've checked on-line calculators which say that I should consume 1,800 calories a day to lose weight at a steady rate - based upon my sex, age, weight and activity level. But, when I eat that much I don't seem to lose at all! I don't want to go on a starvation diet, but I also don't want to take 2 years to lose the 20 pounds I need to lose! If those calculators are based on an average metabolism rate - what is the range? Is there alot of variation in metabolism rates?
Any ideas would be great :)

Sometimes the calculator doesn`t take into it the physical level, so if you are for ex more active you could eata bit more but the main thing is this, if at 1800 cal a day you find that you are not losing weight you either step up the activity level a bit more or take of 100 calories and see if that works...Hope this helps...And remember those calculators are just a guideline..You definitly don`t want to bring your daily calories too low or that will slow down your metabolism...

GymMachine, You are so right. Did you struggle to lose weight too or are you a weight trainer? You have given me hope that someday soon I can be the size I want to be. I know that if I work at it I can do it but sometime things get crazy and its easier to say I failed again, then it is to keep trying. Thank you for all your advice.

Cordial isnt mineral water here no, but diet sodas are ok to drink...im not sure on mineral water you would have to read the label...
The body can adjust to exercise over time...the best thing i would suggest for you to do is change the routine. For example if you use the elliptical trainer for cardio, try a treadmill or swimming or something else. Remember the less efficient we are at peforming an exercise, the more calories we burn so do things a little differently from now on and if you havent already done so, try interval training.
To lovelost, i used to be overweight. i am 5'10 and was 198 pounds. I am now 148.5 pounds and have been for a long time now. I am a qualified (although do not practice) personal trainer/gym instructor also.

thanks..im actually at the gym alot which usually evolves around going on the treadmill and weights. Maybe i shud try out a few aerobic classes? I know this might sound silly but how is it that the less efficient we are at performing excercise, the more calories we burn? wudnt it be the other way round, i.e. being more efficient. soz for being so uneducated in this area im still learning!
