Is there something anyone can recommend to stop the cravings for foods when you are just beginning to eat right?

maybe smaller meals atleast every 2hrs? For a while till you adjust to you bodys beginning to feel again.
Begin to get in touch with the emotions that are starting to come up.
Get in touch with awareness and feelings of physical hunger and emotional hunger.
By learning to tell the diffirence its easier to satisfy your true need.
If you are really physically hungry or thirsty your body will let you know if you allow it to. In order to get the messages we must first actually get hungry.
If anxiousness is how you feel it may be emotional stuff.
Hypnosis helps that issue. I would reccomend looking for a therapist with a history in dealing with weight issues.
You may want to check out a website called EMOFREE.com
Very good results have come from Gary Craigs Emotional Freedom Techniques.

Deb, can i just say, with all due respect, you are really out there lol...oh im just teasin but you seem to look to psychology and hypnosis as an answer to everything...in my opinion, wether it is beneficial or not, it is a minority of the overall equation.

I don't think it's possible to stop the cravings. I do believe there are things you can do to help. When you first start a diet, your body is like, WHAT'S GOING ON HERE! I know roughly the first 3 weeks were hard for me, because I cut down to a 1500 calories a day diet. I was eating 6 times a day, but because I had dropped total calories so low, my body was struggling to adjust. If you can stay strong for the first 3-4 weeks, you will be fine. When you start getting cravings, drink a glass of water, or even diet soda. Sometimes it's thirst and not actually hunger. Ask yourself, are you really hungry, or do you just feel the urge to eat. Also, doing something to take your mind off of it helps too. For example, if you are watching TV, get up and go listen to music. A simple change of thought, will take your mind off of the craving.

I also have trouble with cravings, and sometimes it seems I'm hungry all the time. Other days are not so bad. My biggest craving is for carbs. Evenings are my worst time. I rely heavily on Tootsie Pops. I know it sounds strange, but they are sweet and last a long time, and have that satisfying chewy bit in the middle. After I have one, I don't have carvings anymore. I have sent a query to the Tootsie Roll company, asking for caloric information, but I haven't heard back yet. My best friends during the day are a piece of fruit and a large glass of water. Hang in there - we all know it's tough sometimes.

A Tootsie Roll Tootie Pop has 50 calories, and 0g of fat. Not bad!

Are you aware that your reply is indirect criticicism and in an attempt to minimize my opinion?
If you have an opinion maybe just state your opinion without telling someone what you BELIEVE they are about. That would really be respect thats due. Just because you preface a critical remark with, "with all due respect, or I'm just teasin", it is still a passive agressive form of communication which must reflect in every area of your life.
I challenge you to just make a statement to the presenting question or issues using your information to contribute to anothers true plea for help.
This is a great arena to work it out. I am by no means offended by your comment. I just wanted to point out why others have found your advice so hurtful.
Its only a way to try to control others. You learned it from your caretakers. The good news is you can unlearn it too! Teasin' at the expense or anothers attempt to express themselves is abuse no matter how one disgueses it. I apologize for my spelling and would like to hear your input. bye for now DEB I learned about indirect communication long ago.

I had to add a little more fat

When i first started to lose weight, I had awful cravings for sugar, and giving in to them would cause me to eat a whole bag of candy, or a large handful of cookies. I was eating a very low fat diet at the time, and on the advice of a friend, I added a bit more in the way of "good" fats to my diet, and to my surprise, the sugar and carb cravings went away. I have found that I am able to easily maintain my weight loss (and stay away from sugar) by eating rather more fat, so the very low fat diet approach obviously doesn't suit me at all. Jus my 2 cents worth...good luck on your personal journey.

I received many tips. Thanks for all your input. This is MUCH worse than quitting smoking was. (Sorry, I don't mean to gripe!) Lately, I have been just going to bed about 8:30 or 9:00 pm to avoid eating. How pathetic is that??? :-) Right this very minute I am craving sweets. This too shall pass, right? Sometimes I remind myself of my kids when they want me to buy them a toy! I think it might be time for me to grow up since I am 37 now, eh?
Y'all have a good weekend. And thanks again for the tips. If you think of any more, keep them coming!

how does my saying 'your a little out there' come down to my 'caretakers'?...Deb, i dont know why u try and psychoanalyse things all the time but maybe you should take things on face value for a change...sometimes there is no reason behind an explanation...if i say im teasing, its because im teasing not because of my caretakers....i did find that link amusing though, especially when u dont know me or my 'caretakers'.

Hi there ~

You're scaring me - I thought you were me! LOL I'm 44 and have been in that "sleepy" boat for much too long. I started drinking LOTS of protein drinks. They fill you up!! I'm on a high protein/low carb diet and have gotten SO MUCH of my energy back, it's unbelievable. I use to go to bed at 8:30 after my youngest went down and just lay in bed so "I wouldn't eat and because I was tired" but now I find myself up till midnight and waking up @ 6:00 in the morning. WOW! What a turnaround. I believe it has to do with all the protein and low to almost zilch carb intake. And believe me, I'm a huge carbaholic!! No rice/pasta/bread/sugar. But it's okay! I've lost 1/3 of my weight goal in 3 weeks!! Woopy!
To fill your tummy, try CARB SOLUTIONS shake mix. It also comes in premixed cans, but I prefer to make my own. You can buy it at supermarkets and walmart. They come in chocolate (lovely for that afternoon craving) vanilla and strawberry (my favorite at breakfast) I eat eggs in the morning along with a shake, sometimes a banana and a shake is all I want, I buy sliced smoked turkey breast and cheddar cheese at the supermarket deli and roll the cheese up in the turkey breast (2 of them is enough for me) for lunch, along with another shake. I usually have yet another shake in the late afternoon to fill my stomache. Dinner I eat anything protein. At night (the WORST part of my eating indulgences) I will have a beef stick or beef jerky and some nuts. I crave salt too, which isn't good, but what the heck, I can't give it ALL up!!
It's hard not to snack at night - I have 3 kids and a hubby that eat, eat, eat after dinner like they never had dinner!!!!! I have put mental willpower in my head. I REFUSE to BE old......I may GET old, but I won't BE old.

Best wishes to you - remember, you're not alone, and if I can do it, YOU CAN!!

Thanks for the encouragement. I will try the Carb Solution shake. I just hope it doesn't taste like those awful Atkins low-carb snack bar thingies. I KNOW I could lose weight on those!!! Anyone can lose if they barf after each meal! I do need energy, but the main reason I go to bed is to avoid the late night "eating 'cause I'm bored" routine. I have also learned that with just a little sleep depravation (missing only one hour/night) you can slow your metabolism down by as much as 5%. Not a whole lot, but every little bit helps. I also have PCOS which is an autoimmune disorder. With any autoimmune disorder you need rest. I guess I was just in a bad habit of staying up because my husband doesn't get home until after 8:30PM most nights and I wanted a little unwind time after the children are in bed. But I am trying to take better care of myself. (It sure is hard to grow up, isn't it?? Why didn't my mother tell me it would be like this??? lol) Like I said before, thanks. I really look forward to these messages!
