 HELP ME GET THIN!!
Author: Theresa
Date:   11-11-02 14:42

I have lost almost 10 pounds in 11/2 months, but now I seem to be stuck. My biggest problem is eating more at lunch, and eating things I know I should not be. I am home all day with a 2 and 4 year old with no car to take them anywhere. I need some advice on continuing my weight loss to reach my goal and stay there.

I dont know what this lady is trying to sell you guys but i am here to tell you the truth. If you really want to burn off the extra fat you need to eat reasonably healthy and excersize regularily. I am a personal trainer and a nutritionalist. Do not bother getting this book because the only natural way to lose weight is to eat foods that are harder for your metabolism to break down (such as high protein foods, tuna, eggs, yogurt, chicken, cottage cheese). By eating these types of foods in smaller portions but throughout the day (grazing), you can force your metabolism to work harder, thus burning more fat. It sickens me that this person is trying to sell this knowledge. I would put more faith in thermogenic pills then this book. Regarding thermogenic pills, if taken properly they can have very positive effects for your overall goal; however if they are abused (which n most cases they are) they can cause some severe side effects. Drink tons of water, your goal should be to drink a gallon of water a day. Water is a natural dieuretic. Also if you are serious about achieving the leanest body you can get, look in to taking a prtein supplement called L-glutamine. Glutamine helps the body maintain muscle whileyou lose weight. Muscle mass is important because muscle tissue needs calories to live. The more muscle you have, the more calories you wil need to consume to just maintain your weight. Glutamine also is given to inmates around the country who have HIV or Hepatittis. Glutamine boosts your immune system. Good luck to all of you trying to lose weight and remember:
there are really no gimmicks to losing weight. There are tips and helpful hints, but the main ingredients to losing weight are:
eating well (6x a day small meals)
maintaining a regular excersize program

If you want a book to help you lose weight, i suggest trying to find the book "Body for Life" This book has helped tons of people i have worked with in the past. In fact, i know a few of the testment people on thier website www.bodyforlife.com

Good luck all

P>S sorry guys, i forgot the most important tip:
Always try to do your workouts first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Then wait atleast an hour after your workout to eat. Try and stop eating every night after 7pm...i know thats hard but atleast try and accomplish that feat 3-4 times a week. If you follow this i am positive you will see results fast.

I am sorry i forgot to mention that L-glutamine is a natural suppliment that your body produces. It is a protein (amino acid) that can be taken year round. Recommened dosage daily would be 10g. 5g in the morning or right after workout and 5g at night.

Bill Phillips is a hell of a marketer, but really cmon man. Firstly L-glutamine is not a protein supplement, glutamine is a free form amino acid ( about 99% of the amino acid profile in muscle tissue)...people here arent looking to competitive body build so half of them dont really need the stuff, they are mostly mothers looking to drop a few kilos without all the hype. Melanie is a good person and does have good ideas, also having a money back guerentee on her book. Some people want peice of mind and this board helps them, if you want to help then great, but not everyone is avid bodybuilders let alone lifting weights....also the aim is to speed up the metabolism not feed it foods which is harder to break down, because in reality, there is no such thing!

your once again misinformed....you will burn fat no matter what time of day, morning noon and night....when doing cardio on an empty stomach what is your fuel source? fat you ssay? well maybe if your walking slowly for a long time...but the primary source is carbos'...but hang on its morning and we havent eaten anything yet right? so where does the body go looking for fuel first? GLYCOGEN...which is stored in the liver (which is used quickly) and MUSCLE...so we are using muscle protein or energy to fuel our early morning workouts....good idea u say? DONT think so....you want to keep muscle glycogen as full as possible (apart from enivetible weight training sessions) and this is not the way to go about it....PLUS eating before workouts = better workout..you have energy to work out with and can give your best effort rather than 'running on empty'

I see that you want to help gymmachine and i wanted to offer some suggestions that would help as well. If you want to speed up your metabolism you need to eat foods that are harder to break down because it makes your metabolism work harder. How you can argue that common fact baffles me. Also amino acids are protein ( it sounds like you are confused in this area). It is not just a suppliment for body builders. Do some research on what glutmaine does for your body. It is a wonderful suppliment that every adult should take just like a multi-vitamin. I am not on this board to make you feel insecure or challenge your knowledge, i was just browsing the web the other night and came across the site and wanted to offer some knowledge.

I realize people on here do not want to become professional body builders but you have to understand that cardio alone will not help you achieve weight loss. If you want t oreally lose weight and keep it off, you have to build and strengthen your muscles to an extent. This does not mean you have t go overboard i nthe gym, just tone your muscles. Muscle tissue takes up calories, the more MT, the more fuel the body needs to function. Anyways, if you want to be the guru on this board, i have no problem witht hat, i am just stoppping by to offer some "free suggestions" to people looking for help. I am not a permanent fixture here. Take care and good luckGymMachine wrote:

Your too funny man. I do not have time to waste like this. I have given valuable infomration here for people who want to lose weight. I am not going to argue wiht some insecure teenager on this board. Keep dping wha tworks for you but to tell me i am misinformed is hilarious, this is my living. Cardio in the morning is the BEST time to do your excersize. You should know this if you are the all knowing guru. It is a fact that you will always burn muscle and fat, you can not just burn fat alone from cardio; however that is wehre glutamine comes in handy. You scoff at glutamine but it turns your body anti-catabalic and protects the muscles from being used as an energy source. Come on man, if you are going to challenge these "facts". You find me some research based material saying that this is a myth. Quit being a pompus a-hole.

Hi,

Eating way too much protein is also unhealthy. Over-the-counter supplements are generally useless.

My book does not have any gimmicks. It's about losing weight the healthy permanent way by changing your lifestyle to incorporate healthy eating and increased activity.

It also addresses weight loss challenges such as plateaus, eating out, social eating (holidays), and dealing with sabotage. And it tells you how to stay movitated.

It comes with a cookbook that has healthy recipes that are very simple and easy to make. It has recipes of salads, meat dishes, fish dishes, side dishes, vegerarian main dishes, sandwiches and wraps, breakfast ideas, and desserts. All recipes have nutritional information.

I know that my book works because I lost 23 lbs and got down to my ideal weight before I wrote it. I practice what I preach.

I am confident that anyone who follows the advice in my book will lose weight. That's why I offer a money-back guarantee.

Best regards,

Melanie

I am sorry, but you're wrong. You do not need to train with weights to lose weight. I, myself am living proof. So no matter what you say, I know the truth. I stayed aerobically active w/o any weight bearing activity and lost 10 pounds.

As far as weight traing goes...I went from 223 pounds to 153 pounds and used absolutely no weight training at all! All I did was eat healthy and walk everyday.

i was just saying glutamine is not essential for half the population because it is not really in their interest..i know what it does and how it works but for the people on this board it is probably wasted money...and no im not a guru, ofcourse all information is good information and have no problem with any posts...i know you keep saying your a personal trainer, and so am i, although i dont practice anymore am still qualified and train myself....i think there is the right amount of things for different people....and for the record tone has got nothing to do with muscle, as a PT you should know this! Tone is a loss of fat to see muscle or make muscle more visable....and glutamine isnt a protein per se, you dont go to a supp store and ask 'im after a protein supp called glutamine'...it comprises to make protein in muscle but is a free form amino acid....just my 2 cents.

From what I understand the confusion here is Protein and Amino Acid. Amino acids are the molecular units that make up proteins. All proteins are various compositions of twenty specific naturally occurring amino acids.

The human body is full of Proteins. There are Proteins in the outer and inner membranes of every cell: hair, nails, muscle tissues, bones, and red blood…
The human body uses Proteins to build new cells, maintain tissues, synthesize new Proteins and make enzymes. DNA, nucleoprotein, is the identity card of each person.
See, think, hear, move require nerve cells to send messages. Sending these messages requires chemical products called neurotransmitters, which need Proteins.

The cells can only absorb single amino acids or very small chains. So Proteins from food are broken into their amino acids by digestive enzymes. Then, other enzymes synthesize new Proteins by rearrangement amino acids into specific compounds that the human body needs to work. This process is called Protein synthesis. For example, amino acids link with:
- Fats to form lipoproteins, the molecules that ferry cholesterol;
- Carbohydrates to form the glycoproteins.

When Protein synthesis is complete, the carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen rest is converted to glucose and used for energy: 1g of Protein give 4 Kcal to the body.
The nitrogen residue (= ammoniac) is use by liver, which converts it to urea. The kidneys excreted the urea in urine.

Every day, the human body turns over more Proteins: he needs a continuous supply to maintain a good protein status. If the diet does not contain enough amounts of Proteins, he can start to digest the Proteins in the different tissues.
The first signs of Protein deficiency are a weakening of the tissues: kids do not grow correctly, muscles are weak, hair is thin, and skin is pale, red blood cells decrease: an anemic appears with his complications.

An average healthy adult man or woman needs about 1gr of Proteins for every kilogram of body weight. For example, a 65kg woman needs 65g of Proteins per day: this amount is easily obtained with 2 meals containing each 100g of meat, fish or poultry.

Infants and teenagers, who is growing, need more than 1g or Proteins per kilogram of body weight, between 1,5 to 2 gr.

Anyone who is building new tissues quickly needs also more than 1gr of Proteins per kilogram of body weight. Pregnant women and nursing mothers are concerned: they need an extra 10gr per day. These extra Proteins are used to build the fetal tissues or to produce nutritious breast milk.
Injuries, illnesses also raise Protein requirements: cuts, burns, surgical procedure, severe blood loss, fractures mean an extra Protein to repair or to build new tissues.

For top athletes, recent research suggests that an extra Protein is helpful about an additional 0,5gr per kilogram of body weight per day.

This I got off of Several websites doing some research I hope this makes your understanding about Protein and Amino Acids. Gymmachine and thetruth you are both right. Now the question is is glutimine supply all the essential Amino Acids the body needs or just a few?

just a few im sure..glutamine is, from what i understand, about 95% of the amino acid in muscle so it is important however for the general weight loss community i would say save your money...lifting weights, i would say yeah take it....scott u seem to know your stuff about this what do u think about glutamine?

I dont like Supplements at all. 1 they are hard for your body to absorb and you dont get what the pill actually is made of just about 25-50% 2) You can get all your nutrients you need from the right foods.

A Multi vitamin is good But an Amino Acid Supplement I can live without. Unless you do some major workouts everyday and you cant eat enough food to supplement what your body needs. thats my opinion. Everything in my previous post was off the internet but I did learn all that stuff in Anat and Phys in college just a brush up I guess. I have the knowledge on how to loose the weight and all but just dont have the motivation I am seeking. But I lost some weight so far just dont know how much.

Hey Scott,
Good info and i think you know your body pretty well. It is true what you say about suppliments. The body only can absorb a certain percentage while the rest is wasted, and it is also correct to say you can get most suppliments through eating proper food. For me i choose to use glutmaine and protein shakes because i have a lot of weight and it would be impossible for me to eat enough to supply my body. Maybe thats why i am an avid fan of glutamine. Plus, i worked in a prison here in canada and the ministry of attorney general sponsored a study to find weather or not glutmaine could boost the immune system of inmates. The findings in the study were impressive enough that inmates in Canada diagnosed with HIV or hepatitis are given 10g of glutamine a day to keep their immune system working effectively. I used to get colds and flues once every month or two. I think it was from spending way too much time training my body was always run down. I started taking glutamine as a suppliment over a year ago and havent had a sniffle since. Personally i like using glutmaine because i work out very hard and i do not want to lose muscle, i just want to lose fat. Taking glutmaine suppliments before workout assures me that less glycogen will be taken from my muscles and inturn i will be losing more fat then muscle. But again, you have to find what works for you. I went from being 6'5 220 out of shape to 260lbs with a body % constantly under 10% throughout the seasons. I have to eat like a pig in order to not lose good weight because i have a high muscle mass that requires fuel "calories". Anyways Scott i hope you find something that works for you and keep in mind, im only giving a suggestion from my own life experience. I could not say glutamine would have a positive effect for all of these people on the baord ( i could not say it wouldnt have a positive effect either); however, i could say that if the have tried everything with little success, what harm is it to try taking glutamine for 4 - 6 weeks and see if you notice a difference in your body shape? Good luck to you and take care

The Truth as I stated in my post Use supplements only if you cant eat enough food to get the right amount of nutrients you need. Now the trick is to know how much you need of each Nutrient that has to be learned through trial an error. Some say when you crave certain foods thats your body telling you that you need a certain nutrient in that food. I tend to believe it is right Our bodys are remarkable machines and it knows what it needs but sometimes we dont unless we listen. I have nothing against glutamine (Spelling) but since I dont do any active weight training to gain more muscle I dont need it. Who knows 300lbs from now I might need it to gain my muscle back. But if I just want a toned body I can get enough from eating Protein rich foods. I dont mock what anyone says and I dont pretend that I know everything I just stated my personal opinion like You did and well as Gymmachine did. I hope you stay with us at this board because everyones ideas will help another person who needs them. I personally Thank everyone on this board because I am inspired to learn again everything I forgot from my college years. Well I have to go I just got back from the Dr and I have to stay off my feet because of Celelitis or I will be hospitalized. Take Care and see you all on Monday and The Truth Thank you for your insight as well and GymMachine Your awesome...
