HELP!! I Haven't lost any weight since November!
Author: Melody
Date:   05-03-04 11:19

I am so MAD right now! I have been busting my ass, working out 5 to 6 times per week every week (except for a couple of injuries) consistantly and have not lost any weight since Halloween!!! Correct that I keeping losing and regaining the same damn 2 to 4 pounds weeks after week!!!!!! I know I am not over eating. I have not kept a journal, but I know for fact that my 3 sensible meals and 1 or 2 small low fat snacks a day are not more than 1500 calories on average per day. I work out for a minimum of 1 hour 3 days a week and up to 2 hours 2 to 3 days per week. I do step aerobics 3x a week, and run/walk on the treadmill, and do the eliptical with some upper body and lower body weights on 2-3x per week.

The only thing I can think of this that

A: I've lost 80 pounds and my body is meant to maintain now at the still "obese" weight of 270 pounds.

B: I have a metabolic / thyroid problem that needs to be investigated... or

C: Only gastric bypass will help get the last 100 pounds off that I want to lose.

80 pounds is a lot of weight. I guess I feel the way you do but have not exercised much at all. And I also keep gaining and losing the same few pounds. I sure don't have an answer.

I also don't go over 1500 calories a day, on average, but after going for months, writing down what I eat, and seeing that the weight loss is so slow, the only conclusion I can come up with is that, for me, I would have to eat less food and ALL of that food would need to be "healthy" food. No junk, no donuts, cake, cheesburgers, fried chicken etc. I believe I could lose weight much faster if I could do that.

But I can't do that. I just can't do that!!! After 13 months with an average of .67 pounds a week loss I know (for now, anyway) that I can't eat only "healthy foods". I wish it were different but I just can't get my mind wrapped around that right now.

But I have not given up. If all I can manage is .67 pounds a week (an average - helps me stay motivated when I gain during some weeks) then so be it. If it takes me 2 or 3 years then that is just what it will take.

Maybe your weight loss will be the same. Slow. I commend you for all of the exercise. That's great!! Don't give up. The weight will come of eventually, it will just take more time. Maybe more time than you thought it would.

Good luck and don't give up. Just settle back and relax and do the best you can each day. Again, 80 pounds is incredible!!

counted my calories for Sunday and ....

I counted my calories at Fitday.com for yesterday and I came in at 1416.
So far today I am at 919 after lunch (posting this at 1:30pm). I can see that I"ll most likely max out at 1500 today, no more than that.

The only reason you would not be losing weight is if you are taking in more calories than you are burning. Of course assuming you do not have a medical condition. Keep counting thos calories...stay within your range consistently and you will lose weight.

You might want to check labels on some of the foods (mostly sugar free stuff) that you may be eating. A lot of people see weight stalls or even weight gains from eating sugar alcohols. I know I did. I was doing the low carb diet, eating less than 20 net carbs per day and working out 5 times a week for an hour a shot at Curves. I was not losing and then started to gain before I realized what was causing my turmoil. If you are eating anything with malitol, zylitol, or any of the other sugar alcohols found in many of the sugar free candies, ice cream, cookies, deserts, etc... try cutting them out of your diet and see if it makes a difference. Sugar alcohols are not your friend, they cause cancer to boot.

Good Luck.

i am not eating anything "sugar free"

I am however drinking "diet" tea and "diet soda" as a substitute from regular tea and cola... I can not quit all together. The rest of my life style diet is moderate to low fat and portion control. I do not worry about carbs, as I am addicted to carbs. Life would end if i had to cut the carbs... LOL

I am trying to add more fruits and veggies and cut back on the "refined" foods, but not limiting them more than I am comfortable with. Tortilla chips and salsa is my favorite snack (with in my calorie range for the day.)

How is your water intake? If I don't have at least one and a half bottles of water a day no matter what I do the scale will go up 2-3 pounds and stay there. Then after I drink enough the scale goes down the next day.

Melody,

I can only imagine how frustrating it must be for you.

You say you have around 1500 calories a day and have been working out 5-6 times a week. Have you ever had your body fat measured? Have your measurements changed? Are you noticing you are getting muscular?

I would recommend that first you take body measurements (weight & with a tape measure) and you start religiously keeping a calorie count of both the food and liquid intake (using measuring cups and such) and the calorie output of your exercising for about the next 2 months. If your calculations show that you "should have" lost weight but still did not (using the old calories in-calories out theory), I would take this information to the doctor and have them check you out.

You may as well do this before going to see a doctor, because if the doctor is ethical, they will want to check this out before diagnosing your problem.

With all the work you're doing, even though your weight may be high for your height, you've gotta be pretty healthy--and that is a good thing.

Don't ever give up! The solution may be just around the corner.

Good Luck!

#2 would be worth checking out at your next physical, they can check that along with the normal cholesterol blood tests etc. Best to know for sure.

Last summer, I went all summer not losing a stinkin' pound. I'd lost 50 pounds at that time and then hit a brick wall. It took making changes for me to get my weightloss rolling again. I became a serious weightlifter, not just "casual", and eventually worked my way into Body for Life. I wasn't sure if this was something I could actually do at that time, but just made myself I guess. I also banned fast food.....period. As soon as I did that, the weight started coming off again. Can't help but wonder if part of the problem was the extremely high salt content in fast food. I've found that if I hit a plateau, I have to try something new.

I have been doing body measurments since I started on my journey September 2002. I have not lost any "inches" or fractions of inches since October. I also don't think I have gained any muscle. I am doing some lifting once or twice a week, but more to "maintain" muscle so I don't lose muscle instead of fat.

thanks for your reply
