I know I should know this, because it is repeated all the time, but how many ounces of water should an active adult consume a day? Is it 64? I can't remember, and I am trying to drink more. Thanks!

I don't know the exact number of ounces either, I've just always heard 8-10 glasses a day. I personally drink 2-4 liters a day.

Recently I've been reading that drinking only when you are thirsty is enough. But I think, at least for me, I don't always feel thirsty, then all of a sudden I am and can't get enough. At work I have a large 1 liter bottle that I keep filled up and when at home I keep a glass filled up almost at all times and drink from it as I'm doing stuff around the house or watching TV.

You could probably do a search on water requirements and get alot of information. Someone once posted a site where you could figure out your personal water consumption needs. I don't remeber it or know if it was accurate.

I think I was the one who posted the website, and here it is:

http://www.scienceagogo.com/news/20020711213420data_trunc_sys.shtml

More and more research is coming out showing that the idea that everybody needs to force down 64 ounces of water a day is a myth, a myth that possibly started due to a misinterpretation of a 50-year-old medical journal article. It turns out to be far more likely that most people need to drink only when they're thirsty, that a lot of the water we need comes from the food we eat, and that colas, teas, coffees, caffeinated drinks, etc. are just as good as water for hydration purposes.

But there may be two exceptions to the "drink when you're thirsty" rule: people who are very active--like athlete-active--and people who live in very hot climates probably benefit from drinking liquid before they get thirsty, or drinking more than they feel a need to.

Also, water does absolutely nothing at all to help you lose weight, except for possibly filling you up so you eat less. So there's no reason to force it down if you don't want to. But if it helps you cut down your eating, then go for it.

Thanks for the info...I am trying to drink water with every meal, and when I am thirsty, but when I measured 64 oz. it seemed like quite a bit to me. Thanks again!

I do agree with you on the dubious source of 64 oz. of water/day as a benchmark..

However, I would strongly caution against the rule of drinking water when you are thirsty. It HAS been proven that many of us have lost our sense of "thirst". Think about when the last time you were really thirsty?

That said, we all have felt/feel hungry at times, and in truth, what we really need IS fluids at that point. Next time you are hungry, drink an 8 oz glass of water before eating anything.

In all honesty, one of the best benchmarks to determine whether you are getting enough fluids or not is how often you need to use the restroom.

If you don't have to go regularly, OR if your urine is yellow/gold..you aren't getting enough fluids!!

You are right about lots of foods containing water. Sodas, coffee, etc. do also count as fluids. However, if you are trying to lose weight, sodas offer empty calories. Additionally, caffeine will temporarily affect your arteries, which can also have a negative effect on any workouts.

That said, Coke is my one vice in the world, and I'm not giving it up :) But every one that I have is 140 calories out of my caloric budget of 1700 for the day. Sometimes it's worth it, and sometimes it isn't.
