 Gym or other exercise experts....

I have read (in a very popular book) that for optimal fat burning you should exercise before you eat anything in the morning, and then wait an hour before eating. Again, for optimal fat burning. I have been doing this for about two weeks.

My problem with this is that by the time I can eat it is about 10am and I am ravenous. I want to eat everything. I don't, but I want to. Also, my mornings are very, very busy (work and kids) and it is sometimes very hard for me to exercise first thing in the morning. So, I stress and rush so I can work out (starving in the meantime) or I go ahead and eat and work out later, feeling like I have sabotaged my weight loss goal.

I am very interested in opinions about this. If this is indeed what I need to do I will do it. I am very dedicated to my weight loss (this time!). What do you think?

I also have read the thing about not eating before your workout and I usually don't but if I don't get to work out first thing then I have a nutrition shake. Then I usually will have a protein shake after or cottage cheese and yogurt. I think the theory behind not eating is up for debate between the experts such as Bill Phillips and Eric Satterwhite. The two of them have different opinions on this. Sounds like the not eating is not helping you or working for you. I think if I were in your situation I would eat, plus like I said it may not help you burn more fat anyway. Hopefully Gym will see this and respond too.

Hi Rhonda,
I have always heard the same thing. The reason I believe is because after having fasted through the night, your body has run through most of its sugar (glycogen) stores and so any exercise will burn fat as fuel! That's also why they tell you that you begin burning fat after about 20 minutes of cardio, because you have to burn the sugar first. As far as I'm concerned, I don't really think its makes that much of a difference. I think working out early is great becsue it sort of speeds your metabolism for the day, but the empty stomache thing is controversial. I have heard various reports. But the bottom line is, don't beat yourself up over it. If you can't, you can't. The most important thing is that your excercising. I work out in the evening except for Sat. because I work and am not disciplined to get up at 6am. I think its whatever is comfortable for you that will not make you feel like you have to really strain. Excercise in itelf can be a lot of effort, so don't make it more effort than necessary. Do what's natural. That's the best way to stick with it forever without getting burnt out by really unreasonable goals! I think you'll do just fine!

.....I'm not sure, but I don't think the timing matters a whole lot either,
for any given day, if you burn more calories than what you eat, you will lose weight,
someone else related on another post before that it was just simple math.

(of course I do believe it helps to make sure the calories you do eat is made up of healthy low-fat calories :-)

 Best time to exercise.

I've heard again and again the "best" time for you to exercise is when you're most likely to actually do it. The minor gains you may receive for working out at some perceived optimal fat burning time will be more than offset if the schedule causes you to miss one workout a week.

i thought we've heard over and over calories in versus calories out?
when you exercise you are burning calories.....when you eat you are taking them in
does the number of calories you burn or take in change based upon what time of day it is?

secondly.... there are some of us who have problems with blood sugars and to exercise without eating before hand means running the risk of passing out
I have come very close and learned my lesson to eat SOMETHING... at least half an hour before exercising

These are just my opinions and thoughts
As always you must do what's right for YOU

I always do aerobics in the morning before I eat because I can't eat in the morning. I do weighttraining in the afternoon. I try to work out when I am livid because if I don't I really eatttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt. melissa

it doesnt matter at all..there r no real optimum times, the glycogen thing is only a half truth...the fact is u burn fat non stop even whilst sitting...you are still burning cals and u never use 1 fuel and 1 fuel only...u will always use a combo of glycogen/carbs or fat or even protein as fuel if thats what your diet is like....the truth is if u eat before hand it will not only make u feel ravenous later on it will give you more energy to work out in the morning...and a better workout means more cals used...so i would eat beforehand.

....that is a good point Brandy, that those who are prone to passing out due to problems with blood sugars need to adapt a plan that works safely for them.

Also:
I did a search on the web and found an archived interview that a news show did with a fitness expert, and one of the questions they asked him was should you eat before or after you exercise, and here is a quote of what he said:

"I always recommend having something in your stomach prior to exercise, such as a piece of fruit, some yogurt, a piece of low-calorie toast, etc. I do not recommend working out after a large meal, as your body's energy will be depleted since it is going to the stomach to digest the meal rather than being available to your body for the exercise."

and here is a link to the entire interview for those who want to read it -
