 Gym Phobia
Author: Janessa

I told myself that after I lose 30 pounds I would get a gym membership and maybe even a personal trainer, but now that I have reached my short term goal, I am still scared to death to actually walk into a gym. All three of my previous gym experiences were not pleasant, and I always quite after one or two times of actually going. I have tried just exercising at home alternating between Walk Away the Pounds and my stationary bike, but I have a few major problem areas that don't seem to be sliming down as much as I would like them to. I am not sure if I should wait until I lose 50 pounds, and maybe at that point I would feel more comfortable, or if I should just try it now even though I am really insecure about it. Please let me know how you all feel, and if there is any way to get over this fear.

We are lucky in my town to have a women's only gym. That really helped me get over my initial fear. And I find that in the past no matter what gym I have gone to, there were bodies of all types there. Some heavier than me, and some not. Frequently people there are so into what they are doing that they rarely notice other people there.

I find gyms very intimidating too. As far as waiting till you lose fifty, for me, if I looked like a greek god I'd still not want to hang out in a Gym. I've decided to invest my resources in a home gym.

If you have specific problem areas, why not ask Gym Machine or BFL Michelle about them, or perhaps just throw it out for discussion on the board.

Gees! If these guys can discuss feminine hygiene and bathroom
habits, we can certainly discuss a chubby butt or thighs or something.

The women only Gym would be a good place to start and when you go visit(should have free trial period anyway) make sure to tell the trainer who shows you around your concerns...If you don`t tell her your worries and what happened in the past with your experience to gyms then she can`t help you....My time in the gym was actually a good experience, my problem was actually not be able to get my schedule at the time to work with the gym hours...That restriction made keeping a gym memebership too expenssive for me...(Always would put money towards kiddies first)...Anyway you also may want to check out your local Y.W.C.A. for the work out classes for a while first and move on to a gym later...It is ususlly a very friendly atmoshere and theone I use to take here in town was a combo of aerobics and strength training..I do remember how well they would show each exercises and would promote going at your own pace...Anyhoo congrats on the weightloss so far and Good luck...G

I have lots of friends that go to curves and they all say really positive things. The only negative I've heard is that it doesn't get difficult enough if you are advanced. As I've never been that's just what I've heard. There should be a curves for men and I actually have another friend looking into starting that kind of a franchise.

I was so scared when I first went to the gym. I looked around me and saw all of these people who were really hard-core body builders. I backed away, and went home feeling bad about myself. Then I called a friend who also wanted to loose weight, and we've been going together once a weekend every weekend this summer. It's really nice to have a friend there to support you. If my friend hadn't gone with, I'd probably still be trying those crash diets in which you'd starve yourself. I feel great now, and my friends have been tellin me I look slimmer. I really hope you get over your phobia. It's not all that bad. The YMCA has a great gym-at least at the one I've been going to. They even have personal trainer oppurtunites. Go for it. If you never try, you'll never know what could have been!

i actually lost weight before i started really weight training, i dont know why but i was a bit lax with weights in the beginning...when i first walked in i though 'crap, i got a ways to go'..but u can workout with shirts on and such and not singlets and skimpy gear if your female...but as a guy who is in a gym 5 days a week, i dont even notice other people unless they are super hot, which is bad coz i cant keep my eye on the job and end up having a poor weight training session!....and they are few and far between, i mean after all we are in there for all the same reason...u cant question commitment to even go to the gym, no matter what size you are...today i workout in singlets, yet i am tiny and even somewhat flabby compared to alot of guys...and the gym i go to is in a recreation centre where high school kids go, and they are forever looking into the gym, pointing and laughing or perving or even doing blowfishes against the windows...the point is u have to ignore the ignorant...they dont know you, or your goals...i lift a set of weights till im at absolute failure and red in the face and body with a constipated look on my face, and im sure i get weird looks but i dont care, because we are all in the same boat in the end...we just take different routes.

I kept wondering what to say about a gym phobia. GM is right "Ignore the ignorant" I like that.
And also, remember, those people you think are "perfect", probably don't feel that way about themselves, and would be surprised that you do. Everyone has their own insecurities. Look at Donna! She's gorgeous, and when we look at that picture of her and her abs, we think, "Oh, she's perfect..." But she said that when she looks in the mirror, she still sees the 180 pound fat girl. That's inconcievable to me, but I'm the same way, so is GM, we'd probably think he is perfect, but he doesn't. There are very few people who are totally happy with themselves, and if they are, they're so wrapped up in themselves, they'll never notice you! (Their own loss...)

Knowledge also increases confidence. The first thing I did when I joined a gym was learn the correct way to do things, I hired a personal trainer for a few workouts so I would develop the proper form, and design the right fitness plan. Now, even though I'm still 30 lbs. overweight, I feel like I can walk into any gym anywhere and feel confident and comfortable enough to work out there, because I know what I'm doing is right for me. I was terrified of exercise. But what you do have in common with other people in a gym... everyone is there to improve themselves somehow, and a lot of the intimidatingly "perfect" people have struggled with the same issues we are facing.
You're doing it for you, and only you, what anybody else thinks doesn't matter.
