Are you the person that started this message board...?

Why do you feel the need to be so harsh and quite frankly tactless in your answers..? This is a support board for people who are struggling with some weight issues. I understand that you may wish to use your "expertise" to help us poor little people but please do so without the antagonisic remarks that patronizingly coat some of your replies. I said previously your views are respected, but please be mindful some of us are abit more sensitive to criticism and see your replies as being hurtful and impatient.

heh? what the?!!!! ....tactless?...harsh?...antagonistic remarks?!...hurtful and impatient?!
i am guessing this is because of the previous post which was intended to belittle somewhat so called professionals of the industry like doctors and such...now i see these people all the time...another example is so called pro's saying that 'a bag of '@!#$' that sits on your lower abdomen makes that cut look hard to achieve' which was in DUDES reply recently....no as i did with him, i told him the truth....if this sag of crap actually had some truth to it, we would all rush and get surgery to get it removed since it has no apparent function...in other words the idea of this sag of crap was in itself, a load of @!#$...so i told DUDE as i told you, that sometimes these 'pro's' arent always on the money..i know im not on the money all the time either but their are some proven things universally which are common knowledge in the health and fitness industry...
as for the genes thing its a similar scenario...whilst genes play some role in body shapes, we can always alter their direction by things like diet and exercise...i just didnt want you to leave thinking ' a pro said genes make me fat so i will believe it and not bother trying'.....AND i even went as far as to say the support groups are a good idea....but still im harsh and tactless so i guess i wont help anymore

Puffinsmum,
I don't think GymMachine was being harsh. On this post we all are entitled to our own opinions. I don't think anyone on here is a doctor, and even they don't know everything! People can only speak from experience. I have been on this board since May of this year, and I visit it pretty much every day. There have been times when someone says something that is a difference of opinion, and we all should be able to accept other peoples views, and discuss them as adults. I think people sometimes hate the truth, and they don't want to hear it. Just as he said, we all have genes that make us a certain way, but there are things we can do to overcome certain things. I was overweight as a child and all the way through high school. I went into the military, and lost weight, but when I came out, I stopped exercising, and from 1991 to April 2002, I went from 185lbs to 296lbs! I have grandparents on both sides who have been overweight as long as I've known them. My parents have never been excessively overweight. They have been maybe 10-20 pounds over, and then lost that. My brother was overweight until high school when he decided to lose weight, and he hasn't been since and he's 25 now. All that is to say, I have fat genes, and if I don't do anything about it, I will always be overweight. It has only been since I was tired of feeling the way I felt form being overweight, and thought about the health problems that could come from being overweight, that I just became focused to lose weight. I believe we can all achieve anything that we want. So, just think about next time you want to over eat, or eat something bad for you what it can eventually do to your health. Use being healthy as motivation. Since April 25th of this year, I am down 49 lbs. It was through my own will power and God that I was able to get this far, and now it has become habit. That is the key, making a lifestyle change, and not being on a diet. Something to think about.....If you go to the doctor, and he tells you that you are overweight and need to lose weight for your health, are you going to say, "hey doc, that's harsh", or yes I know, how can you help me with it?

see by your reply your have flown off the deep end. I was just saying form a person who is combating a weight problem I find your replies tactless. I did state though that your information is appreciated and valid. It was just the way that it seems to come across that they are mockingly written. My reference to the support groups is that in a post you wrote, things like you are lacking motivationGymMachine wrote:

GymMachine has been a constant source of friendly, reliable information on this board. It looks to me like people are trying to pick a fight with him here... and this board is NOT the place for flame wars.

Leave it alone. Everyone has bad days, we put it behind us. I respect GymMachine's thoughts, and think he is great for the board- adding more knowledge... which we need (we have plenty of support), I don't think I'd be alone in saying this.

Hi Puffinsmum,

This is Melanie - the person who owns this site and who started this message board.

GymMachine has been participating here ever since this message board went online a year ago. He's been a tremendous source of help to everyone here. His weight loss advice is extremely good and sensible.

I would never classify his messages as "tactless". It's just that he does not sugarcoat the truth... and some people can't handle the truth.

He tells you the truth like it is, and then it's up to you to whether:

* Hide, cry, scream "tactless" and stay in denial

* Accept the harsh reality no matter how hard it is and TAKE ACTION towards achieving your weight loss goals

Best regards,

Melanie

To Puffinsmom

I agree with Melanie that GymMachine has been, by and large, a great source of information for a lot of us here on the boards. I am actually a physician, and still I find myself learning and obtaining support from a lot from his comments, as well as from everybody else here. Afterall, as Derrick says, nobody knows everything, and weight loss is more than just a knowledge thing.

Granted his comments can sometimes be "edgy" in attitude, they are however made with the truth in mind and with no malice at all. Also, from personal experience, GymMachine is gentleman enough to apologize to people when he has crossed the line.

In this case, I honestly think that you were the one initially out of line in giving such a sarcastic remark on a well-meant comment. In your mind it might be obvious that improving your eating habits is something you can do while "stranded" with your injury, but your original message was not quite indicative of that. Besides, any attempt at extending help - be it redundant or even "stupid" - is an effort to help. So take it for what it is worth. Oftentimes, people here will be repeating the same answer to a question, and will be stating obvious facts over and over again. However, the fact that they care enough to answer your post should be something to be appreciated in and of itself.

To be frank, I am making this my first and last communication with you, mainly just to make a point of defending GymMachine. You have definitely made me "afraid' of giving out any comments I think might prove useful to you. I would much rather spend whatever time I have giving my two cents worth to those who, although may not appreciate or find it useful, will, at least, not potentially give me grief about it.

Hope your leg feels better soon and googluck on the weight loss.

Michelle

To GymMachine -

I would appreciate an apology to everyone for the cursing. I understand your frustration (as you can see above), but the cursing was really unpleasant.

Michelle

GymMachine-
Please, keep helping us out. I always thought that your responses had a lot of truth to them. Your responses really helped me out!!!!!!
Just because some person on here doesn't agree to the way that you respond, I always thought that your responses were (by the way never harsh or rude or any of that!) but were those that told you the facts and what it's like.
You've really helped.

Jen

I have never found Gym Machine harsh, tactless, antagonistic, patronizing, hurtful or impatient. I respect the advice Gym Machine gives me. Gym Machine is one of my favorite contributors to this board.
