I feel like me wanting to go to the gym is getting out of control. I go to one of the most competitive High Schools in the state and have loads and loads of homework every day. On average I get about 3-5 hours of sleep each night. Needless to say I have very little time for a life, fitting my gym schedule is getting tougher and tougher as the school year progresses. If I had any equipment at home, that would be great. But I don't. And since I don't drive yet, going to the gym is a whole big thing for me that takes at least 2 hours out of my day (if u include the driving there and back and all that). Not that I mind doing all that, but realistically for me, it is not possible for me to go to the gym more than 2-3 days a week. Which is ok, I guess. But lately I've been beating myself up over not going. This sense of guilt is taking over me and isn't letting me be me anymore. It's hard to explain, but it's like a little voice in my head that keeps yelling at me, telling me I could have tried harder, gone to the gym more often.
Like today, for example. I didn't have time to go to the gym. And now I'm just sitting here and thinking how I could have been doing my cardio right now... I get really upset with myself... and I dunno how to make the guilt go away...

If you are doing cardio, why not get a VCR tape or DVD and do it at home when you have time? It would subtract 2 hours for you to get more sleep.

I was thinking of doing that... which I might for some of the days. But personally for me- I need to see the exact stats of what I'm doing... like calories I burn, distance, heart rate, etc... I might still give the videos a try though. Thanks.

Why sit there and feel guilty ? There is always exercises you can do right at home, right now, when you don't make it to the gym, right ?

I feel like it's not good enough and will just be a waste of time. I know I'm probably wrong but that's just the way I see things. I gotta see the numbers, and know how many calories I'm burning.

I understand what you are saying, I like the calorie counter and mile counter on my treadmill, but even if you just do a strong 30 minute workout at home when you can't make it to the gym at least you will know that you had a solid workout even if you don't know the specifics of exactly how many calories you burned (there are charts where you can figure a fairly good estimate though), anyhow, at least you won't feel guilty knowing that you did get some good exercise in, right ? :-)

You can always log onto fitday.com to see how many calories you burned while doing almost anything.

you do know that the calorie burned estimates are just an estimate right????
i mean unless they seal you in a air tight containor and monitor the oxygen you consume and the co2 you output and measure your urin and such (it is a LONG complicated thing to EXACTLY know how many calories you burn) that you will only be going by an estimate!!!!
that said.... you are busy... you are in high school.... you need to make a change that will last a LIFETIME! eventually you will have children, a job, a hubby and all other things that can make going to the gym hard.... you need to learn how to do things so tha you will be able to do them forever..... even if you just go for a 30 min walk/jog/bikeride whatever (my most favorite thing is to put on the elmopalooza cd and BOOGIE for 30 mins with my kids!!!!)
there is a site out there... mostly a cleaning/organizing/housework site.... (www.flylady.net) she teaches us that you can do anything in 15 mins.... and you can.... i think that you should look at her site..... i find that she has helped me a lot with my exercise/housekeeping/life skills....
so... you can use fitday, caloriesperhour.com or any of a million other sites.... to monitor your estimated cals burned.... the thing that must be realised is that exercise is exercise is exercise!!! (it took me a while to learn that... i thought i always had to do the video... and if i didnt do the video but danced instead it "didnt count" but you know what??? the 4 KG i have lost so far tell me that dancin with my kids definately COUNTS!!!!!!)
so.... go hugg yourself and dance like noone is watching!!!
hugs

I know what you're saying about wanting to know the numbers when it comes down to calories burned, I'm obsessive about the numbers as well. Jenn is absoutely right about not being able to get decent/accurate figures from most machines becuase all the formulas that accurately measure calories burned need to know how much oxygen you consume. Having said that, you can get more accurate estimates about how many calories you burn while doing anything if you get a heart monitor. I rely on my Polar A5 heart monitor/watch to tell me how many calories I burn for any generic exercise. With your age, weight, average heart rate, and exercise duration you can get reasonable figures on calories burned. These figures are still estimates, but they are better estimates than what you can get without the average heart rate data.

Yeah I know it's only an estimate. But aren't the heart monitors (the thing u put ur hands on) on an eliptical machine the same as a heart monitor you can buy seperately? Just wondering.

I think they follow the same principles. The benefit of having a heart monitor that you carry with you is just that - you can carry it with you so when you can't make it to the gym, you can strap on the monitor and go for a run or walk or bike ride around your neighbourhood or around the block when you are at school or something.
You have to be able to fit exercise into your daily routine just as you do your shower and doing your hair and having your meals, etc. Make it an absolute necessity that MUST be done.
And you also need to accept the attempts you are making. Too much guilt can have the same affects as too much stress, it can make you sick and drag you down.
It sounds like you already have a stressful workload right now, please try to understand that no one is going to be judging you or expecting you to be superhuman, except yourself. Sometimes an honest and open reality check with yourself can help reduce the guilt we all feel when we aren't succeeding as much as we'd like.
Good luck,
Niki
