 Fast food

I wanted to hear some opinions out there on fast food. I've been working for about six and a half months now on formulating a better/healthier lifestyle for me. I'm a stay at home mom who doesn't get out of the house that much unless it's to go out to eat w/my husband or lunch w/a friend. Well, having said that...that's only partially the reason I enjoy going out to eat. I like it! And am not prepared to give it up! I wanted to make a before/after list of what I used to eat and what I now regularly choose to eat (and love it).

Before:Taco Bell>2 tacos, 2 mexi-melts and maybe an order of nachos
Now Taco Bell>2 chicken soft tacos

Before:Mcdonalds>Crispy chicken sand combo (biggie sized!) OR Big Mac combo
Now: Mcdonalds>A side salad, OR chicken salad shaker w/vinnegret dressing along w/a hamburger Happy Meal minus ketchup

Before Wendy's>Bacon cheesburger combo (biggie of coarse), or a spicey chicken combo
Now Wendy's>a large chilli w/some kind of salad...w/low fat dressing

Before Chic Fila>Chick Fila sandwich w/x-tra lg fry along w/a kid pack of nuggets
Now Chick fila A chicken wrap sandwich w/honey mustard

Before Pizza Hut>All you can eat bar...w/all I could eat...(don't ask, it's ugly
Now Pizza Hut> Mounds and mounds and mounds of salad w/lettuce, tomatoe, onion, a FEW bacon bits & a smidge of cheese w/low fat dressing on the side (I dip my fork)...then I usually end up having no more than two delicious slices of cheese thin crust pizza.

I could go on...I don't want to give up my eating out I enjoy it too dang much! So far I'm still losing weight (slowly) w/this approach. There's a few places that I still avoid either because I don't like their lower fat/calories choices or the high fat items are too much of a temptation right now (Popeyes..bisquits!) But that's ok.
You know the above was my "usual" before choices I didn't go into my binge choices! Anyone out there ever acted like their ordering for two...or three?

I like eating out a lot too. I think it all depends on what time you eat the stuff half the time and how hungry you feel after. I found that that fast food seems to be something I wanted when I have had a busy day and meal times have been skipped anyhow half the time.

I suppose if you do it in moderation... then it can do no harm. Although some people seem to get portion sizes way out of whack... and as the food pyramid misses out crucial info about energy density of a lot of foods, it is hard for people to get their heads around what they should be taking in one sitting in my opinion. I noted the fact that it pushes carbs on the bottom tier as something we can eat lot's off and yet they are very high in energy density---energy that some of us simply do not burn off--even though we are on low fat diets. If your eating a burger and a bun---fine...there is your fistful of carbs or portion taken up...add fries and you have blown the portion of carbs ... Will the bun keep you going 2-3 hours or for however long you have decided you are going to eat daily? I doubt it. It never does satisfy me anyway. Is the protein size on the bun adequate? Not really unless you have a Big Mac that is ... and then you've gone OVER the protein size. A deck of cards is the approx size for a serving of protein anyway. What many of us need to do is get real with the portion sizes and learn more about the energy density in what we are eating and a reality check on what we need to do to burn that energy...because if we don't, it all goes to the hips unfortunately. It is easy to over eat when out and eating food prepared by someone else I guess. We're not really thinking about what is in the food we're eating. How many grams of fat in it are there and what "type" of fat is it anyway? It is saturated fat half the time---so I always think about that one and wonder how many grams I have left to take where my fat is concerned in that day---the more grams of saturated fat I take, the less of the good fat's (EFA's) I can eat = deficiencies.

I think that Fast Food is as I said ok for special occasions but we need to put it in perspective...on the whole if it is just an ordinary day and you have not eaten well and are wanting something fast because you haven't got time to cook...your far better off going to a shop that sells filled rolls or something really or quickly making a sandwhich if your at home (ten minutes of a job) and filling it with what you need the majority of the time and just saving occasions with Fast Food to birthdays or kids birthdays etc.

My kids are always pestering to go to McDonald's or KFC but to be honest, I don't want them getting into the habit of relying on fast food anymore than I would rely on them, so we reserve it for special occasions such as birthdays etc.

mmmm my before and after for TB
Taco Bell> before... a grilled stuffed burrito with a mex pizza
Taco Bell> after... a chicken soft taco and a bean burrito

I am still trying to avoid TB because it is almost too much of a temptation for me. REALLY REALLY LOVE IT.

All I can say on the subject is that I used to complain all the time that it was not fair that we had to drive to the next city to have Taco Bell (before lifestyle changes) now I am very thankful that we have to drive to the next city for Taco Bell!!!
I really really don`t think I could handle having a Taco Bell in this city I think that it would fall into the "I can`t help it I have to have it category" LOL..G

I feel like the evil fast food fairy. I didn't mean to give everyone visions of tacos, burgers and pizza dancing in their heads. Just wanted some input on how everyone copes-adapts-or just plain abstains.
I'm now waving my magic spatula over my head...(**POOF**), all those nasty fast foods have been replaced with apples, yogurt, spinach, and lean turkey cutlets.

I think it is a matter of will power really. If you want something enough...you don't feel as deprived...

I never said we should not have them anyway or abstain completely, but to save eating out for special occasions. As it is, I would not be able to afford to eat out all the time anyway, which is perhaps a blessing.

To me you did a great thing. You took the choice and cut it back MAJORLY. Instead of super sizing you did a small meal and a much healthier one too. You cannot go cold turkey on everything and what you did was keep the pleasure and you kept your promise to loosing some weight.
In this world of time when a parent or non parent is rushed and the kids are screaming FEED ME then a parent has to cave in. We live in a fast paced world. Yes I would say no to the Mighty Big Mac and say yes to that salad, but watch the dressing too. My mother taught me to dip my fork in the dressin then take a stab at the salad and you would be amazed how lil of dressing you use.
I on the other hand live 10 miles from any fast food place and so I really have to debate is it quicker??????? Normally it isnt so I am able to say okay I will make me something.
Keep up the good work

this was the first time we were going out to eat since i started watching my weight etc. i just tryed to pick the things i knew were not the worst things to eat and ate small portions. i did treat myself to banana pudding-which was SO GOOD! but i only took one small scoop and that was it!! that way, i had something sweet, but not enough to beat myself up about it! or feel like i went way overboard! eating out is hard i don't go to mc d's anymore- i choose Subway instead. which now i just learned that i must change the white bread (which i love ) to their wheat bread (which i'm not too happy about) but i will try it! i have heard alot of people lose weight from eating at Subway-so it can't be wrong! i'm not saying i won't ever eat again at Mcdonalds-i'm just cutting way back from that stuff at this point. feeling good about myself-but it's still hard sometimes! god luck!

it's not fair fast food places don't offer something other than salad for people trying to be healthy!
