I find it interesting that although this is supposed to be a 'health promoting' dicussion board, most respond negatively to Bryan's helpful injections. Your responses imply the true nature of your weight loss needs. The need to look better, if only on the outside. If you were truly wanting overall health improvement you would welcome Bryan's opinions. I am now finishing my M.A. in Medical Anthropology and can varify Bryan's 'claims'. Everything is not ok in moderation. The foods that have been identified recently on thre board have the ability to leave carcinogenic/metallic residues in your body. You may feel fine now, but ten years from now you may have cancer. Roughly 70% of cancers are diet related. The easiest way to understand this fairly new perspective to diet and nutrition is to compare the overall health of our 'western' society to the overall health of Japanese society. They suffer far fewer cases of cancer and are not plagued by the chronic heart and stroke statistics our culture is. Diet is everything. Even what you eat in moderation leaves a mark. Eating something once a week is not moderation.

I realize that many will have a opinion in response to this post. I urge you to look critically at your opinions. Are they educated and informed? Or do they serve a personal purpose. Research and explore before discounting others opinions.

First, not everyone disagrees with Bryan in principle, although he does have a rather autherittative way of telling others what they should or should not do. I agree that TRANS FAT is a bad thing, since it raises my cholesterol, and, in the form it occurs in baked goods containing hrdrogenated fats is an artificial manufactured product. The other topic he addressed was tuna fish, and I had already seen that the FDA were advising pregnant women to avoid it, so i figured that was wasn't healthy for them, might not be healthy for little kids either. Accordingly, I stopped giving it to my kids, and switched to canned wild Alaska pink salmon for the fish sandwich I sometimes make for their lunch. As for what other people are eating, in my humble opinion, we must respect everyone else's decision on what to eat, and respect their right to state their opinions. As for what you said regarding Japanese society, which was in part that "They suffer far fewer cases of cancer", well, that is only partially true. The Chinese also suffer less from certain forms of cancer that plaugue us here in the West, but other forms of cancer that are less common here are suffered in higher numbers in Asia. Perhaps that does have to do with diet, but some forms of cancer are very common in Asia, but rarer here, just as some forms are more common here. Please remember that figures just released show that Americans currently have the longest life expectancy in their history so far, so we're doing something right here! Our food supply in the United States is one of the safest in the world, although there is room for improvemnt in the matter of pesticide residues in the fruits and veggies, hormones in the meat, and antibiotics in the chicken (why I feed my kids mostly organic foods.) This board is a nice place where people feel free to read posts (without a rather imperious "Everyone read" header), and feel free to respond to them with their own honest opinion, and I hope it will remain that way. I'm not trying to argue with you, or to offend you, but we all have our opinons, and I do welcome hearing other's viewpoints. Dee

Thank You Dee, as far as the moderation issue yes they may be scientic proof to what you claim BellaLuna but other then the fact that my french canadian food upringing tends to make people chubby , I will let you know that my great grand mother at 98 years of age could still enjoy dancing when she faelt like it, at 100 yrs old she had a "beau" in the seniors citizents complex where she leaved.(Mind you she made sure that when they visited they were well chaperoned since the "beau" was also 100yrs old!
Her daughter, my grandmother was 98 yrs of age when she passed away while her sister who still tended to her own home and garden at the age of 96 reached the age of 99yrs old....My mom who is now 65 yrs of age looks healthier and is in great shape although she was pregnant 10 times and gave birth to 9 kids in less then 11 years....On my dad`s side both my grandparents leaved to be 92 years of age ....So are you telling me that had they not eaten the tuna, margarine or other fish us marime people are famous for eating and let me add the beef and pork and potatoes they would have leaved to a ripe old age? Just wondering....

 My Opinion Only!
Author: Derrick

In my OPINION, I don't think anyone is trying to say anything bad about Bryan's posts. I think it's more or less, that everyone here is trying to eat and exercise better than they have in the past. And as Gym Machine stated earlier, I'd like to know what Bryan eats. It is also hard to have perfect foods. Unless you can grow your own fruits, and veggies, as well as raise your own chickens, cows, turkeys, etc, you can expect some chemicals of some sort to be in all our food! There has probably been something bad said about every food source out there. And we aren't from Asia, therefore we don't practice the same eating habits. I do agree that we don't have the best diet here, but some of us try to eat better and get more exercise. And there is a such thing as moderation! I don't know a single doctor out there that would say anything is wrong, or that it will affect you if you eat some not so healthy things every so often. Matter of fact some not so healthy things are said to be good for you that we eat and drink. There have been studies done that show beer has health benefits as with other alcohol such as wine. Chocolate has health benefits as well. And all the studies said, in moderation! In actuality, we should eat all foods including healthy foods in moderation. I don't think there are many if any health professionals on this site, but we all have our own opinions and have a general understanding of what we should or shouldn't eat and drink. We basically look to others on this site for things we don't know or understand, because nobody knows it all! And again these are all opinions, which everyone knows, and people take those opinions and use them however they choose. I hope that was an educated enough response!

I posted this message because I noticed that Bryan's posts were met with aggression. I wholeheartedly agree that everyones opinions should be heard, hence my original post.

I think the BIGGEST thing here is WEIGHT LOSS........therefore the name of the site is practicalweight loss discussion. Bryan's information is his opinion and he is welcome too it.......as long as it is not negative or mean. But......I must say.....at this point a LOT of people on this board are trying to LOSE WEIGHT which is THE BEST thing they can do FOR THEMSELVES at this time, that alone will cut down the risk of cancer, heart disease and God knows what else. And I'll be.....if they do it by eating tuna or whatever else, they are STILL making progress and at this point that is all that matters as they are taking a GIANT step forward.....all the stuff that Bryan is posting is just going to deter a LOT of people as it is so CONFUSING. It's hard enough as it is. As was said before EVERY food practically has been criticized for something. Moderation IS the key!!! :)

Weight loss is important, but only if it is healthy weight loss. There are many unhealthy ways to lose weight: diet pills, coffee, bulimia, starvation/under nutrition, the Atkins (or any high protein, high fat, low carb) diet, slimfast, herbalife, appetite supressing herbs.

If a food is going to be a staple in your diet, and it contains a known toxin, how can we recommend to anyone that they eat this food? If people want to eat some food that is unhealthful, please be my guest. I will not judge you for that. But I don't think it is great to advocate foods that contain toxins to other folk who want to lose weight in a healthy way.

I am sorry if I sounded mean or judgemental in my previous posts. I really believe that if you eat healthy foods, that you will lose weight without having to restrict your calories and without suffering.

For those of you interested in my diet, I posted it under the margarine thread.

Bryan

Well i look at it this way:
We train and lose weight to look good...and lets not kid ourselves, its for the oppisite sex or to atleast feel good about yourself and achieve that 'better' you.

Now we can do this whilst still enjoying some pleasures in life (meaning a vairety of food)...we can still eat refined foods that taste good and still achieve a good body (appearance wise)...now we can also achieve this by eating all fruits and veggies (even seaweed!!) and no refined foods...so if we are all going to end up in the grave anyway, why not enjoy some foods and get a good body, than eat plain foods like fruit and veggies non stop and have a miserable time eating the same stuff...sure it may add a year or two to our lives, but we only have one shot on earth, may aswell enjoy the simple pleasures in life

oh and to reiterate one more thing....your muscles wont grow with fruit and veggies..they need protein and more than the reccomended daily intake for average individuals....so if u wanted a 'hard' body, all u guys, the non-refined foods and seaweeds and such wont cut it....u atleast need a good whey protein to supplement with to grow...either that or eat a shitload of chicken/turkey...i know which ones easier!!

Thanks Derrick, I think that you expressed what most of us are thinking ...And you are right we are here and we have made improvements on the way we eat and exercise that in itself shows that we care about our health and no it is not just because of the way I look!

I think its all in the way Bryan comes across sometimes, it seemed more like a fear factor tactic. Like others said, everything we eat can contain something unhealthful. For some, buying everything organic is hard to do, whether it be availability or expense. For me, I buy fresh fruits and vegetables at a healthfood store, but it is also quite a bit more expensive where I live. Before we moved here, I didn't have a store nearby that sold organically grown fruits and veggies. The larger grocery stores here only have a select few that are organically grown if any at all. I think people here are all open to what has worked for others and are supportive to everyone trying to achieve their goals. I read Bryan's other post and I think its great that he has had success in his weight loss and healthy lifestyle goals. I know for me, that I would be setting myself up for failure following Bryan's diet. I have had success as well just changing eating habits and exercising regularly. I think everyone here wishes success to everyone. Jill

There are some guys that eat only fresh fruits and raw veggie, and don't take the protein supplements, and develop muscle. They may not be a big as the folk taking the whey protein, but the are bigger than the average guy. Below are some web pages with pictures. You may consider them skinny, but to me they look like they have muscle.

I agree I may have to eat more protein to grow muscle. But I believe I can do it without going to the extreme of 0.8 to 1 gram of protein/pound of bodyweight. I think the reasons body builder need this much protein is because most of the protein they eat has been damaged, coaguated, and denatured by cooking or processing. Much of the protein cannot be broken down to the amino acids by the body, but instead remains in long amino acid chains, and the body treats those chains as waste product. Also, some of the amino acids have been damaged by heat and don't provide a good raw material to build human protein.

I didn't mean to scare people with this information, but rather have people read it and make their own decisions. I also don't expect anyone to try my diet, although I do feel it is a very healthy diet.

People can still eat foods that I consider "unhealthy" and not have any health problems ever and live very long and productive lives. The body is a wonderful machine, and can remove toxic materials out of the body if it is given enough of other health factors: rest and sleep, no stress, exercise, clean air and water, sunshine, and lives in a supportive and emotionally satisfying enviroment. The way you know your body is properly detoxing is that you feel vibrant, your mind is clear, your skin and hair is healthy, and you don't have any excess fat or weight on your body.

In this modern society sometimes we can't make the time for proper sleep and rest, our lives are stressful, the air and water is polluted, we're inside all the time, and our families and coworkers are not that supportive. In this situation, our body is unable to detox all of the unhealthy foods we may have eaten, so they remain in our body, and our body will insulate itself from these toxins with fat. And over time, we find ourselves overweight.

It hard for us to control our environments. We have to work, we can't change the air, we can't change our families. But we can change what we put in our mouths. This is one of the few things we can do to help our health. The other thing we can do is exercise.

The most healthy things people can eat are fresh fruits and fresh vegetables. The American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute say we should have a minimum of 5 servings a day, up to 9 servings, to help prevent cancer.

And if you need to eat foods that contain toxins, do try to increase the other health factors in your life.

I do agree with you Bryan that we have to take control of the things that we do have control over to be healthier. I also think its great the way you changed your lifestyle and committed yourself to it and have had great success. I was just trying to say that the people here are all trying to change to a healthier lifestyle, I know I have. I do eat at least 5 usually 6-7 servings of fresh fruit and vegetables everyday. Which for me is a huge change from what I was eating 7 months ago. I have totally change my way of thinking about eating habits, I don't think of it as a diet, I don't really count calories, but as a lifelong dieter I have a pretty good idea about the caloric value of just about everything. I feel better now than I have in a long time. I exercise daily and I have also lost over 20 pounds. I don't deprive myself, occasionally I will have a SMALL piece of chocolate, I don't go overboard, I think this is why I have had success this time. Before I would totally cut out anything with sugar or fat, and after a few weeks ( if I made it that long ), if I didn't see the results I was hoping for, I would give up. But I have taken it slower, and didn't get up one day and totally change the way I ate and my activity level. Fortunately, I have a very supportive family, and this has more or less been a change for my family. We are all eating healthier and are more active. I know that these changes are making me healthier and hopefully extending my life.
