I'm actually from CA, and , in fact my father was born in CA. His mother was born in Sonora, Mexico, and her parents were from Spain. My Mother's family is descended from dutch and Spanish settlers in New Mexico, and she can trace her family roots in New Mexico long before it was part of the U. S.
Neither of my parents spoke english when they started school, and so both were determined not to have children who spoke Spanish. Thus, the only spanish I ever learned were from swear words my mother called me, or high school spanish.

I am taking a night course in Spanish becuase my husband seems to teach me only the bad words then tells me "go tell my mother what I just tought you". Boy did I learn my lesson! It sounded like such a pretty word.
He didn't speak english when he came here either although now he speaks it better than me LOL!
