 Ephedra
Author: joemar4

I was wondering. Has anybody used any of the many available pills that contain ephedra along with their diet?

I don't believe that you can take a pill, eat whatever you want and not exercise........and the pounds will just fall off. That's a crock!!

I did some research and found more than a few studies saying that using ephedra (in suggested dose, no higher) along with dieting and exercise does help burn fat. The articles did say that this was shown to work with extremely overweight people and really had no effect on those who were only 20-30 pds overweight.

I also read that Ephedra is no more dangerous than most drugs. The major problem being that people seeing results while taking the prescribed dose thinking..."Well, if I'm losing weight taking 2 pills, imagine what I'll lose taking 4 pills"...hence, the danger and reason for problems occuring.

I just wanted to know if anyone has tried or is using Ephedra and what their results were....if any.

Have a happy..............

Joe

The only pills I'm taking are vitamins. I don't want to give up one crutch (food) for another crutch (diet pills). And I certainly don't want a "crutch" that may make me have to use crutches!

EXCERPT FROM FDA BULLETIN DATED 1994!!

Adverse Events with Ephedra and Other Botanical Dietary Supplements
FDA has been receiving increasing numbers of reports recently of adverse events associated with the use of certain products marketed as dietary supplements for weight loss, energy, and ergogenic (performance-enhancing) and body-building purposes. These apparently diverse categories of products often contain a number of similar ingredients, including Ma huang (Ephedra sinica or Chinese ephedra, a botanical source of ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, and norpseudoephedrine), guarana or Kola nut (caffeine sources), white willow (salicin source), and chromium. They may also contain various amino acids, glandular products, or other nutrients. They are touted for their reported stimulant effects (pep or energy) and their ability to enhance metabolism with subsequent weight loss (so-called "fat burners").

With the increased marketing and use of these products, FDA has received an increasing number of reports of adverse reactions associated with their use. These reported reactions vary from the milder adverse effects known to be associated with sympathomimetic stimulants (e.g., nervousness, dizziness, tremor, alternations in blood pressure or heart rate, headache, gastrointestinal distress) to chest pain, myocardial infarction, hepatitis, stroke, seizures, psychosis, and death. These adverse reactions have been reported both in young, otherwise healthy individuals and persons with confounding or complicating conditions such as hypertension. In addition, a stimulant "overdose" syndrome has been reported in children and teenagers who have use these products.

.....I agree that diet pills are NOT worth the risk, some people have had some very serious results from using such pills.

If people would give the "practical" approach to weight loss a serious try for at least 3 months they would see that simply cutting calories below what your maintaince calories would be and exercising does indeed work.

I lost a total of about 100 lbs so far, (85 lbs in the past 11 weeks)
WITHOUT using any diet pills or potients at all, all I did was to reduce my calories and exercise. (and I was serious about keeping track of my calories so I know I was well under my maintaince calorie level).

The "practical" weight loss method of reducing calories and exercise DOES work !

ephadra is usually combined with white willow bark ( a natural asperin) and caffeine to form what they call an ECA stack...basically it is a stimulant...some people can take them with no adverse reaction and some cant...symptoms, if any, can include the popular shakes, nerve twitches, anxiety, restlessness etc...this is all because an ECA stack is essentially a stimulant...now it does work, but it depends how u as an individual handle them...i have tried them but here in australia ephadrine is banned so i took the substitute called synophrine, but found it useless..synophrine is like ephadrine 'lite'...benefits are no symptoms usually, but on the negetive it just doesnt really work...u either go the whole hog or not at all really..if u were to try, i strongly suggest u start at 1 pill per day and not the 12 perscribed by hydroxycut or xenedrine or most other ECA stacks...if u can handle it then try a bottle but dont make a habit of living off them..they do help but they are a very individual supplement...if u feel twitchy etc after taking 1 capsule i strongly suggest u throw the bottle out...its an expensive experiment to see if you can handle the supplement so maybe your better off not bothering.

1) I have taken more than one type of pill that costs about $100.00 and just about all the otc stuff avalible - don't do it. I have taken stacker, stacker 2, the stuff you take before bed, hydroxycut, xenica, xenidrine, detabolife. the only think ephedra did for me was give me energy to work out after work me and my friend (who is lighter than me) where on ephedra together and exersized daily afterwork until her doc noted at 24 she had high blood pressure, because of her age and how high her blood pressure is, they did a stress test where they made her work out and then checked her blood for the enzyme that causes heart attacks. the levels where dangerously high. basically the whole time we shere doing aerobics and even worse lifting weights Kim could have dropped dead. scary enough look at the money side of it she now owes $6,000 (TGFisnurance) to the hospital - thats more than her car is worth. that was over a year ago and the doctors have her on blood thinners (dont get cut and DONT get internal injuries) and high blood pressure med. At least she only acts like an old lady because she has a pill box with m-f and she's not in a wheelchair or have a pee-bag strapped on her leg from heart attacks!
She is also now uninsurable for life ins - too bad for her family - most dont think about life insurance until they're older. and heart problems will be pre-existing unless she decides to continue her job at IHOP when she gets her engeneering degree.
As for it working - the only thing I ever lost on was the old hydroxycut before they took out the stimulants and I found that It wasnt the stumulants but thecombination of diet exersize and HydroxyCitricAcid - Found safely in gurana extract, grapefruit, and now SAMS has a variety pack of sugar free sodas supplimented with it.

I say protect yourself from heart disease, diabetes, ghastric disorders, etc and eat and exersize and be happy and healty. trust me -Chicks don't dig wheelchairs and colostamy bags
Diet pills are just excuses, like no time or it taste bad. - I am a full time college student and work OT every week. - I dedicate 30 min a day between my work and my 3 night classes or before my 2 morning classes. The people on this board gave me what I needed - a reality check. (i.e. a swift kick in the but.

I used to take ephedra when I was in grad school a few years back, not necessarily to lose weight but for the stimulant effects of it.

It caused my heart to race and I was jittery as though I'd gotten into the chocolate covered coffee beans again - but i could crank out assignments like there was no tomorrow.

Then there was a frightening story in the local paper about a Washington state woman at the BC-WA border crossing (in BC) and she passed out or something, stepped on the gas and drove through several cars, racing towards the border. If I remember correctly a couple people were killed. She was apparently spaced out from taking ephedra diet pills and didn't know what was going on. I stopped taking the pills after that.

Joe,
There are no such things as magic weight loss diet pills. I've tried ones containing Epherdra myself and so has a friend through a company I now rep for. But because of mounting pressure and possible legislation they have now stopped manufacturing them.

They certainly do work and you notice the difference quite quickly. You have more energy, and clothes feel a lot loser.

BUT, you still have to eat carefully. They are a tool to aid weight loss, but not an entire solution.

Epherdra can be dangerous depending on the usage. People with heart or stroke history would be advised to not take them.

There has also been studies that suggest long-term the effects of Epherdra are not as good because your body becomes tolerant to it.

Regards,
Jason Clark

If you believe this to be true, then what is that CRAP you're trying to pump in the advertisement in your "profile line"....hummmmm?

Your 'advise' isn't worth the pixals it's written with!

I meant that a diet pill used in conjunction with some exercise and a good diet will help weight loss. Diet pills won't work all on their own. Have a nice day now :)
