I'm going to the gym after work today and rather than pound my shin splints on the treadmill, I thought I'd try one of the elliptical machines. They look rather awkward and I was wondering how long I should start out using it and at what level?

i think for at least the first 5 minutes you should just go with a manual setting or low level with little resistance just to get your balance. keep your hands on the handle bars! After you are comfortable with it you can try one of the "programs". I use the intervals settings and the ramp goes up and down every 2 minutes from level 4 at resistance 4 to level 10 at resistance 4.
i love the elyptical!

Melody
How long had you been exercising when you started on the eliptical and how long were you able to go? When I first started using it I could only go for 1 minute and I have only gotten up to 6 minutes so far, although I haven't tried it in a couple of weeks. I decided to get in better shape, because that thing near about kills me everytime I use it. It hurts my thighs, makes my heart pound so hard, and gets me so out of breath really, really fast. I guess I could try it again or maybe I'm just too old for the darn thing.

Hi Dawn,
When I first started using the elliptical, I was only able to go for about 4 minutes before I felt like I was dying!!! (No kidding!!) Now (after 6 weeks) I've worked myself up to 15 minutes. Do like Melody said...hold on to the handles. I almost fell flat on my face trying to drink my water while working on it.
I've done some research on this machine, and from what I've read, its one of the better machines for overweight people to use while they are trying to lose weight. I also read that you get the same cardio effects in as little as 20 minutes as you do doing 45 minutes on something else.
