Hello all! Last night I did 40 minutes on the elliptical machine and was sweating myself silly when I decided to change the display and see how many calories I had burned. Now, I don't know how the "machine" would know this but it said I had burned 358 calories and gone 3.5 miles! I almost fell off the dang thing! Did anyone else know this or am I just still in my learning phase? Thanks!

OMG! i LOVE the elliptical machine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if your machine has a setting to put in your age and weight, it will give a more accurate count of calories burned. I, myself and go 2 miles in 30 minutes and burn right at 400 calories!!!!!!

I love elliptical machines so much that I spent 800 on one for my home.
When I first sarted working out on the BFL plan, it's been 3 years now not 2 like I thought, I was using the treadmill for my cardio with little results.
Well, I switched to the Elliptical since the tread was hurting my left knee - I've never looked back. In my opinion you burn more cals with what seems like a less streneous work out. I think it seems less streneous due to the lack of impact on my back and knees.
Woo Hoo - go Dawn on the Elliptical!

Thanks! I plan to return tonight and sweat even more. How long do you stay on it? I didn't know if 40 minutes was too long starting out or not long enough...so much to learn at my age!!

I do 20 minutes (according to the BFL plan) high intensity/interval cardio.
I have increased to 30 and 45 minutes before, but did not notice any better results.

Hi Dawn,
That's awesome that you were able to go on the elliptical for 40 minutes. That thing kicks my butt every day...and I only do 20 minutes. When I first started out, I could only do about 4.5 minutes. I've gradually worked my way up to where I am now...and you're right, you definetly sweat like crazy when on it.

I often crank out 60 minutes on my elliptical at an average HR of around 160. When I was heavier this activity used to burn me around 1500 calories, now I get about 1000 for my efforts. The elliptical is a sweat inducing machine! The front of my shirt is absoutely drenched in sweat after every workout. The elliptical rules for getting a good workout with minimal joint pain. I've been using mine since I weighed around 400 pounds and never, ever has it caused me any pain. Lately my cardio of choice has been riding my bike, mostly becuse the weather is nice and bike riding is just a little more fun.
