OK, I took your advice and tried the elliptical machine today. I went for 30 minutes and set a heart rate for 140 - this machine has a monitor in the grips. After a few minutes, I understood why I put my elbows on the bars. It is because the muscles being moved in my back and butt are not used to the motion. So I toughed it out and stayed on the contraption.
FYI, I did a little research on the calories burned and found that elliptical machines over estimate calories by 20 to 30 percent. My workout said 300 calories, so I'm recording 25% less, or 225.

Good job! Gald you stuck with it. So overall do you feel like it was a better work out than the treadmill? Do you feel like it will also help buid some lower body muscle to support your back?
Interesting about the calories burned.

I'm not sure if it is a better workout than the treadmill, but it is a different one. It should help with my butt. My wife was telling me that I used to have a good one, now I don't have any -- guess I literally ran my butt off.
It was much easier on the ankles and my heal didn't hurt at all after I stepped off of the machine. I'm thinking of getting a heart monitor that counts calories to see how accurate the machine's calorie counter is. Since I keep detailed logs of energy in and energy out, I would like an accurate assessment of what I burn.
One odd side affect was my toes went numb on both feet. I'm going to loosen my shoe strings tomorrow and see if that helps. Since I'm only on it for 30 minutes, I don't think that is hurting me. However, when I bump it up to 45 - 60 minutes, I'd like to not get numb for that long.

My toes do that too. It seems like it happened alot at first, but now rarely. Wonder what the deal is with that?
I looked around for some info regading heart rate and calories burned, but all I found was the monitors that count calories. Sounds like a good idea.

I think it has to do a lot with your feet never leaving the "ground." When i used to use the elliptical, it happened a lot. I think it's the pressure (that's all i could ever come up with)
