Hi everyone,
Are eggs okay to eat often? I know you shouldn't have them if you have cholesterol problems but what about otherwise? They are great and have a lot of protein and not bad calorie wise either...... Just curious

Depends on how you fix them.
Hard-boiled or poached is great because you're not frying them. Scrambled is fine too, but some people tend to scramble them in butter or lots of oil. I found a way to get around that, I simply use fat-free cooking spray made with canola oil (in a good non-stick pan) and it seems to work very well. I'll fix 2 eggs but only one yolk, since the yolk is high in fat and cholesterol. But the yolk is also high in many minerals. So I allow myself just one.
I buy eggs from grain-fed hens. They CLAIM they're lower in saturated fat than regular eggs and higher in omega-3's.
Here's a link with the nutrition information on eggs. As you can see, one egg contains small amounts of TONS of vitamins and minerals.
http://www.aeb.org/food/nutrient.html
I see nothing at all wrong with eggs, as long as you don't fry them in grease and you limit how many yolks you eat. A friend of mine frequently has egg white omelettes for breakfast. You can load them with vegetables and other nutritious goodies :)

I go for the egg whites only ;o)
Calorie Savings - Egg Yolks
Egg Yolks are not ideal diet food if you want to lose weight.
Remember: losing weight means controlling calories. We need to reduce our calories-intake until it it is LESS than our calorie-expenditure.
Calories - Egg Yolks vs. Egg Whites
2 eggs scrambled w/ 1 pat butter & whole milk contains 260 calories.
That's 13,520 calories, per year
Better Calorie-Choice: More Egg Whites, Less Yolks
1 egg, 2 egg whites, scrambled with skimmed milk contains 144 calories.
That's 7,488 calories per year.
Calorie Saving
If you substitute 1 egg and 2 egg whites for 2 whole eggs as described, you save 6,032 calories, per year.
Weight Loss Consequences of this Calorie Saving
6,032 calories per year is the equivalent of 1.7 pounds of weight.

it really depends on who you talk too... my dad... (lets just say if dr. atkins was a god my dad would be his #1 deciple!!!) eats 6 eggs a day... he says they are GREAT food....
I believe... eggs are ok depending on how you cook them... we use a cast iron pan (well seasoned only needs a LITTLE oil to cook in) so when i cook for our family (usually a doz eggs... but hey theres 5 of us!!!!) i use about 1T of oil.... then i add veggies like tomatos and g. peppers and zuchini and make open faced omletes (basically scrambled eggs) and a little shredded cheese.... i think its very healthy and we have "open omelets" about 3 times a week...
we have to remember that a certain amount of fat is necessary.... especially if you are feeding children because the nervous system needs fat to form properly....
hugs!

One way to enjoy eggs if you really like them, is to use one whole egg then use two or three egg whites. The only thing that is wrong with them is the cholesterol. Other than that, they are fairly low calorie and high in protein. I enjoy one or two a week, but no more.

I wonder if Dr. Atkins ever bothered to tell anyone that eating that many egg yolks is BAD.
They're finding more and more dangers and more and more hypocrisy-related 'stories' and recommendations to this Atkins diet. People are losing weight on it, yes, but they're also clogging their arteries with fat.
A friend of mine went on the Atkins diet. She lost a little weight but developed chest pains. She went to the doctor after a few months of being on the Atkins diet and found that her cholesterol levels were through the roof.
People on the Atkins diet think it's a free ticket to being able to eat all the meat and dairy they want and they take it to even extremes that Dr. Atkins himself doesn't recommend.

i tried the atkins diet for about a month.... and i got VERY VERY sick.... my liver swelled... and i was almost hospitalised (my liver enzymes were so high i was only like .01 units away from the amount where they reccomend it) and it was hell... (i should mention that i have health problems BEFORE The diet.... and they involve my liver.... so i think that the atkins diet just aggrivated my problems)
and now i can never talk to my dad for more than like 3 mins because he gets on his aktins is a god trip and tries to talk me into it againtalking about how carbs are evil.... and everything... he even told my son that his favorite food (ramen noodles) would rot his insides and everything.... he was crying for a long time... so now my dad is not allowed to talk to my kids unless i am on the phone with him....
oh well... i believe everything in moderation.... i dont believe in any "diet" that eliminates any food group.... now just to convince my dad of it?!?!?!?! oh well!!!

First of all, let me commend you for not letting anyone, your dad or otherwise, say these things to your child. He's just a kid, for crying out loud, and even though I believe in doing what you can to get your kids to eat healthy, telling them that a favorite food of theirs is horrible is just not nice. My son loves ramen noodles as well. I don't let him eat them all the time, however, because ramen noodles *are* high in fat, but the occasional bowl isn't going to kill him.
Secondly, I can't believe anyone would tell you to go back on a diet that was harmful to your health.
Kudos to you for not listening! :)

hi! my nutritionist told me that eggs are fine, just not to have alot of fat with them, because cholesterol needs fat to adhere to arteries, and if you have like 2 eggs poached or scrambled with cooking spray and don't use butter, and toast with spray butter or jam, and fruit or something, that isn't enough fat to make the cholesterol stick. I was worried about that, but she said that it was cool.

You're example isn't very fair. you're not just comparing egg whites and eggs w/ yolk. You're comparing whole milk and butter with skim milk. That extra 1.7 pounds a year can probably be eliminated if you take out the whole milk and butter. If you do that I guarentee you'll end up losing a lot more than 1.7 pounds a year! :)

Why are the WHOLE eggs automatically lumped together with butter and whole milk but the 2 eggs minus one yolk is mixed with skim?
I understand you're trying to make a comparison, but just because one might eat their eggs whole (without removing the yolk) it doesn't mean they're going to fry them in grease and use fattening milk, if they use milk at all.
Just wanted to point that out :)

I posted that comparison to try and show that making small differences makes transitioning to eating better, a little easier.
I tend to only eat egg whites, even in hard boiled eggs...and if I am cooking egg whites, I use spray butter in that pan and that's it.

Oh, I see :)
I try to do just the whites myself. If I have yolk at all I eat only one.
