 Eating one meal a day
Author: joan

In light of the conversation below on how many meals one should eat, how often we should eat each day, and our metabolism.................

Is it not possible to eat all of a day's calories in one meal? If not eating all day long does not slow your metabolims down, then is there any problem with just eating one meal a day?

This might not be the easiest way to lose weight but would eating one meal a day of 1500 calories or eating 6 meals a day of 1500 calories make any difference in weight loss? Calories in vs calories out. If one could battle the hunger it shouldn't matter when they ate, right?

Eating several small meals a day, 2 to 3 hours apart has it's advantages and benefits, but in my opinion - with regard to weight loss - it doesn't matter when you eat the calories as long as there is a deficeit at the end of the day.

I believe that's like playing with fire! If you eat everything at one sitting then you just have to suffer the rest of the day and more likely than not, you will end up eating something.;( The idea is to have a calorie deficit at the end of the day without feeling like you're on a diet! When you start doing dramatic things with your eating pattern, well that's no different than a "fad diet"! Just eat small meals throughout the day and you'll feel as though you're living your life normally and you are less likely to fail!

Joan how long can you continue eating one meal a day? Why set up a system that you can't continue for life. If you do that you're going to regain every thing that you loose. Thats the flaw in every diet I have ever been on.

A few things to think about...

Here you go Joan...

Imagine an artist is about to paint a painting. Somehow she knows it will take 6oz. of different colored paint to fill the canvas with her masterpiece. Will her painting be beautiful if she puts all 6oz of paint on the brush all at once?

Imagine you're a new mom. let's say that for a new mom to keep her baby healthy she needs to feed him 6oz. of milk every 3 hours. How would it be for her new baby to receive 48oz all at once and only once each day?

You're on an airplane to Hawaii. The plane will need approx 10 gallons of fuel for each 5 minutes in the air to keep you moving toward your paradise vacation. It's only a 3 hour flight because you live in California. What would happen if the pilots flooded the engines with all 360 gallons in the first 10 minutes of your trip?

Fuel in... fuel out right?

PS - Many fat people eat only once per day. So I guess it depends on your goal.

I lost over 50 pounds eating nothing but Subway once a day. That is approximately 800 calories. Then on Friday and Saturday nights I would go out with friends and have some drinks and a nice meal. That would probably come to well over 1500 calories. But those other 5 days when I only ate Subway really made the weight peel off in a hurry.

Getting used to eating 1 meal a day was more of a psychological hurdle than a physical hurdle in my case. I wasn't really hungry but my mind was always telling me to eat constantly since that was what I had been doing my whole life.

In the last couple of months I have become slack and have put on 20 pounds. So now I'm back on the diet again and things are working well. Dropped a pound this week.

Well, I have lost 35 pounds and do not eat just one meal a day but there had been a discussion a few threads down about metabolism and from what I have read here, you cannot really change your metabolism to any degree that would make a difference in weight loss.

That was the reason for the "one meal a day" comment. If we believe that you have to eat less than you burn each day it really wouldn't matter if you ate all of the food at one time. I've never done that, I was just trying to make the point that eating one, or two, or six, or eight times a day may not affect how much weight we lose. But of course eating one time or ten times a day helps us limit our intake of food so we can lose weight. Whatever works for each of us is the plan for them.

I do sometimes eat little throughout the day if I have plans for dinner out, or something special. Tonight we are having pizza. We all know how many calories are in pizza!! So I'll limit what I eat today so I can enjoy the pizza tonight.

Frank,

You said that you dropped 50 pounds eating just one Subway sandwich 5 days a week and then having drinks and nice meals with friends on weekends.

Then you say you've become "slack" in the last couple of months and gained back 40% of the weight you lost on your "diet."

Now you're back to your Single-subway-5-days-a-week-drinks-and-nice-meals-with-friends-on-weekends Diet. Do you seriously believe this is a good way to feed your body and a live a healthy lifestyle?

Well this just seems like a last resort for me. I have tried every diet on the face of this earth. Diet Pills, Powder diets etc., I tried excercising 2 hours a day, while on a low Carb Diet, and the weight just would not fall off. Let me refraise that not as fast as I wanted or expected. Especially when I made a commitment to wakeing up every morning at 6:00am, and excercising before or after dinner. So I have made my mind up to eating one time a day. Even though I'm not sure what type of results I will get from it.

Hi! I am new to the support group. I am interested in this topic because I know fasting works for many people not with just weight loss, but with keeping the body free from toxins and the brain clear. I noticed this post was way back in March, but I am wondering how things are going for you now. I have fasted on and off throughout my life. I lost a lot of weight on the Weigh Down Workshop and promptly became pregnant afterwards. Then, I had other difficulties and was on antidepressants for six years. I gained too much weight during that time. I recently am off the antidepressants and find it was the best thing I could ever do for myself. I now question the need to ever have been on them in the first place. Since I had been used to fasting or just eating when hungry, this method is comfortable for me. I do not think about food all the time and truly only become hungry when I am close to my regular eating time. I do not over eat. I am losing weight at a good, but not too fast pace. I feel better than I have felt in many years.
My husband on the other hand, would never consider this eating plan for himself. He is a runner and bike rider. He eats a bowl of healthy cereal for breakfast and then a normal dinner. He is thin and does not obsess about food.
I believe there is no one way for people to control their weight. Each person has to find what works for them.
There was a 76 year old Thin woman in a church I once attended. I one time asked her what her secret was. She said she had fasted one day a week since she had been in her early twenties.
Well, I was just wondering how other people that practice the benefits of fasting are doing.
Thanks,
s_j_mcgin
