 Eating habits

It's constantly being said, that pretty much all diets work, as long as you reduce calories. Whether it's low fat/low cal,low carb, or whatever it works. But, I have been seeing that pretty much all diets bring you to a stopping point with weight loss. I was reading an article from MensHealth.com this morning, and it was saying if you eat low calorie, you will lose weight, but you will eventually slow your metabolism down doing so, thus causing your weight loss to slow or stop. The funny thing and most people don't know, is that you can raise your metabolism by eating more. This is why I recommend a cheat day once per week. You won't gain weight, and the extra cals, will fire up your metabolism. Just yesterday, my mother said she felt like she lost weight over the weekend. She ate off of her diet this past weekend, but she said she felt like she lost weight. I said you probably did, and explained what happens. So anyone who may be at a weight loss plateau, and you have stuck to your diet and exercise plans, you should consider adding cals to your diet to help fire up your metabolism. I ran into a major plateau 6 months ago, and decided to add cals to my diet, and it worked.

Good advice. While I don't quite agree with the increasing metabolism by eating more (cause you can't increase it enough to make a huge difference), I do agree to the cheat thing simply for the mental aspect.

Hey Derrick. I was wondering about you. How are things going with your program? Hope all is well. I have a cheat day every week and without it I think I would binge big time all the time. It keeps me sane a going!

It's a fact, not an opinion, as far as the metabolism thing goes. Yeah the cheat day can be looked at, as a mental thing too. I don't have cravings during the week, I guess because I know mentally, I can have something off my diet on the weekends.

why is it you always state it's fact when I disagree? Medical groups say it's not eating that boosts metabolism but exercise to build muscle.

Things are great. I'm still going at it. Matter of fact, I have 4 people under my wings now. My wife, Mom, cousin, and a friend of my wife. I have gotten them all on plans. They come over to my house in the evenings to work out. I love it. I could do it for a living. I've just gotten away from this board as much as I used to, because it isn't the same anymore.

Ken, I didn't know I always did that. But, a fact is a fact, no matter if you or anyone else disagrees. I only state facts. I also state when something is my opinion. Why is it that everytime I post, you are the first to respond, and then it leads to some form of a disagreement? This is one reason I don't post to this board as much.

I said it was good advice to have a cheat day. I said I didn't quite agree with your reasoning. Then you state that it was fact. Now alot of people come here for weight loss fact and advice. That is why I counter your statements with what the medical community says through articles. I rather have people see two sides disagreeing and being able to see both sides that just take something thrown up as a fact and take it at face value.

I only said it was a fact, so that people didn't think it was my opinion, and that it is true fact. Wouldn't you rather know facts about weight loss, versus someones opinion. I know I do. That's what I live by, facts!

I enjoy my cheat day and it helps a tremendous amount as far as my mental status about dieting or rather changing the way I eat!!!! I think cheat days rule!!!

The board has changed a lot, and sometimes I think the topics get away from what it should be about, and that's Practical Weight Loss. MNMichelle.......Ken and I disagree at times, but he is not the reason why I don't post.

but Derrick..it's not a fact. That's where we disagree. A fact is something proven and can be backed up.

A cheat day won't boost metabolism. exercise, increasing lean muscle mass, and the proper nutrition can boost it some. I posted a link to an article on metabolism. It's just as likely we are disagreeing on the finer points than on the idea.

Let me restate I'm not saying what you are doing is wrong. In fact sounds like it's working out great for you and that is always a good thing..

anyways, what's a little disagreement? just showing two sides of an issue and that too is always a good thing.

I'm going to jump in on the tiff!! Heehee. Ken sees your point, Derrick (from my outside point of view!). You're free to back yourself up with where you got your information. I also think cheat days are a good thing and can be productive for weight loss on many levels. As far as the physical/ biological processes that happen, I would love to read a journal article that explains.

Thanks,
Tara

I notice that when I start to slow down with my weight loss it really helps to have a cheat day. It's not every week for me, usually once a month or sometimes twice. I get a super sized meal from McDonalds and BAM! the weight starts comming off again. It's strange but it works for me.

I don't have a problem with the disagreement, but again, a fact is a fact. I didn't say it was junk food, just the fact of more calories in, is the reason behind it.

Jay Cutler, Ronnie Coleman, Flex Wheeler, Sean Ray, Arnold Schwartenegger, Bill Phillips, Tom Venuto..shall I go on. Also Ken, you have only been doing this for a few months, right. But you always disagree, and have negative comments when I post something. I have been doing this for a year and a half, and I am still learning. The only thing I can disagree with, is an opinion. I have learned a whole lot in this year and a half. I read every single day, and through trial and error, I have gotten a long way. But for someone who is green to this, you should maybe learn to listen and take in what you hear sometimes, instead of always putting your personal opinions into something.

It's no attack Ken. It's the truth. You haven't been dieting and exercising long enough to always shoot down what someone has to say. Every single time I post, we get into it. I never argue with anyone else on this site, just you! It's been weeks since I have posted, and who do I get into it with when I finally do. You! Like I said, you are still in a learning process, and you should be open to what others have to say. Imagine how I would look, telling Bill Phillips, he doesn't know what he is talking about. I look at real people, who have real results, and have been into this for a long time. I'm still learning myself!

You always start with me Ken. I try to post useful information. I'm not looking to always have what I say shot down. If I state an opinion, then I can expect a disagreement. But I post facts most of the time. And you don't always know what you are talking about. If you did, you would have never disagreed with me on what I posted, because it is something a seasoned person would know.

Anne-Marie...

I seem to recall that you got into a great big huge argument with her awhile back. Something about the Atkins plan. You were so hot and bothered against it. Then you come back a few mo later with a totally different view and had an argument with someone else (cant remember who may have been Ken) So I think you might want to re-think the mr innocent 'I never argue with anyone else' thing.

And about the whole time frame for diet and excercise...just because Ken has just recently started his own weight loss journey doesnt mean he isnt just as 'educated' as you are...he seems like a smart man, I'm sure he has been reading since 6 or 7. I myself could tell you all about how to plant a garden, what kinds of plants to grow, how to fertalize, etc...do I have a garden...NO.

Sorry if it seem like I am picking on anyone, but when people get that holier than thou attitute it just drives me nuts!

Yes, I did have a disagreement a long time ago with Anne Marie about Atkin's. Since you are recalling from something a long time ago, you should also remember, that I said I changed my views on things, because I realized I was being a bit closed minded when it came to dieting. And I will say again, you can't go around dogging everything someone says, when you haven't been doing it very long. Anyone can know a little something about anything, but you can't assume you know more than someone who has been doing it longer than you is my point. Since Ken has been on this site, every single time I have ever posted anything, he has had something negative to say. And frankly, I'm sick of it. You should respect everyone's approach whether you agree or not, and I am human, if you keep jumping on me, I'll fight back. Sorry if you don't like it, but that's the way it is!!!!!!
