i am so glad there is a support group on-line. i have several questions to ask.
1. how do you count calories and how many should i be taking in? (i am female and 26)
2. i want to tone up my body and lose 20 lbs. what exercises can i do that will give me the best results?
3. in the past i have seen remarkable results from jogging/running but i can't leave my house and i don't have a treadmill. what are some cardio things that i can do in place of what i've done in the past that will give me comparable results?
4. besides the "oprah show" what are some things i can do to motivate myself and keep going when i feel like quitting?
5. who wants to be the person i'm accountable to?
6. i have a young family of five and a tight budget. it is too time consuming: 1) to figure out what i should eat and what my family should eat, and 2) to prepare my personal meals and those of my family. what are some recipies/menus i can prepare that we will all like and that i will reap the benefits of.
7. what are some easy-to-read/understand internet sites related to fitness and weight loss?
when i assess a problem i like to find the solution as quickly as possible because i don't have the time to waste. bottom line is- i'm doing this all by myself, my plate is full and i don't know what i'm doing. i'm very serious about this change in my life so i need some very practical advice. could anyone out there PLEASE educate me so that i can figure out what my "customized" program is??

My way was simple. Quit eating. I eat once a day and just started walking a couple miles a day. So far I've lost 27 pounds in a few months. I get really hungry but it's better than being fat.liz wrote:

Well you dont want to quit eating, just smaller portions (of course healthy ones) and more often. You want to strive for 5-6 smaller meals. This will enable you not to be so hungry that you binge. Instead of eating once a day or 3 large meals you feed your system, so you dont go into starvation mod,. (Which helps the fat stay on). Of course you need to get cardio as well as strength training. Since you are just starting out, just start small. Walk, get out of the house, I know it is cold where I live but I see the same guy for the last 2 yrs out there running (with his dog, and its cold). And I have seen his body change its so great. I personally work out in my home, I stay at home with the kiddies. Get a cardio tape, work out to that. Buy some weights, start at a low weight, since you are just starting. More skinless chicken breast, always watch portions, always. It has a lot to do with how MUCH we really eat. Get some fruit, vegtables in the house, get rid of the junk, and go for it. Good luck hope this helped some.
I too have lost a good amount of weight doing this, so I know it works, GOOD LUCK. You got to want it to achieve it:)

I am overweight myself and would do almost anything to lose the weight, but eating once a day is not a healthy way to lose weight. Your body needs energy (food). You may lose a lot of weight now, but eventually instead of losing fat you will start losing muscle. I wouln't recommend anyone trying this method.

Calories depend on a variety of factors...what I know for sure is that you don't want to fall below 1200 a day, because your metabalism will begin to shut down at that level.
I just turned 40 Jan 3rd I've lost 27 pounds so far by keeping my calories at around 1600. I do that Monday through Friday. Saturday I allow myself to eat things that I might be craving (in moderation)...I also eat the one thing I'm always craving! Icecream! I eat Healthy Choice. I find that I don't mind saying no to cake and cookies and candy no matter where I am because I don't want to worry about enjoying my Saturday icecream. It's just what I do...it works for me. Sunday I do a slight "make up" and try to stay a little below 1600...Then it's back to Monday..
Everyones different find what works for you...will a day off help you? Keep you motivated? Keep it fun? I've been losing about a half pound each week this way.
Excercise? I walk three for four days a week (30 to 45 minutes) and I do free weights 2 to three times a week. Sunday's I do nothing!!!!!!! Rest!!!!
It's hard to find excercise options besides "machinery" when your housebound.
Weights are great for boosting your metabolism...Cardio? The only thing I can think of are aerobic tapes. I've done that before..it works if you have the room.
If your interested I'll try to get you the 1-800# for a great mailorder catalog called Collage, they have lots of tapes to choose from.
Motivating tools? There's a million and one. For me making a game out of my calorie week is enjoyable. One of my main motivating tools is setting small goals (like a five pound loss), and rewarding myself w/non-food rewards. Here's some on a tight budjet. When I reached one of my goals I went and bought a ring on clearence at Sears. For six dollars I now have something pretty to wear and a reminder everytime I look at it that I attained that goal! I bought a pair of jeans for one goal. Smaller goals get smaller but just as special rewards...fingernail polish, new blush, a new exfoliating cleanser? Make it something that makes you feel even better about yourself.
Food? Being the one who has to constantly "think food" for the whole family can make it very difficult! I'm in the same boat. What has helped me more than the actual food has been letting go of the guilt over limiting what kinds of food are in my house. I've decided that buying and stocking healthier fare is not selfish but responsible and even loving. During Christmas we'd all had non stop sweets filling the house from friends and neighbors...We would commend them for their kindness and thoughtfullness then when no one was looking I'd throw five, seven, ten at a time of whatever it was in the garbage! Guilty? No! The sooner they were gone the better! Ha-Ha My kids eat cracker and cheese, pretzels, fruit, etc...now more than Doritos and Little Debbies. Yes they'd choose those if they were here...But their not!
Dinners? Here's a recipe my whole family likes...(it's my 9 year old's favorite!).
It's called Ham Rollup....
You spread out pizza crust (from the can)
Spread 1 tbl.sp plain yogurt w/a little over 1/2 tsp. dijoin mustard on the dough
For the kids I put on
shredded low fat ham
Shredded cheese ( I prefer to cut back on amt. and use the real stuff)
Broccolli.
Roll it all up...use to toothpicks to make it stay closed and bake at 350 untill
done...Time? When Crust is cooked through and brown...(30 minutes?).
For Mom and Dad I make another roll with everything above plus onions and mushrooms. It's awsome! If you like it let me know and I'll give you another recipe.
I'll have to get back to you on the internet sites I'm late for my walk!
