Dr. Phil haters please feel free to skip this post. I just wanted to share with you that I finally got the book on Tuesday and I just finished reading key #1. I have known for a very long time that my weight problem is emotional and I have never read a book that deals with this issue until now. I am reading this book slow so I can digest everything he says and am doing all of the work he asks of his readers. One thing he says in his book is that different things will work for different people. I know that I have tried several different diets, pills and read many books only to not be at the weight I want to be. I think this time it will be different because he works on the inner person first before he deals with the diet and exercise part. I already have a new attitute and am working on my inner dialog to help me achieve permanent success this time. I am excited to start this new program and will keep you posted on my success. Have a great week everyone!!

Hi! I don't often post, I'm very shy. But I just read your post, and I could have been the one writing it! I have had the Dr. Phil book for about a week, and I too just finished reading the first key. I'm going so slow too! I want it all to sink in. So far that first key has helped me change the way I look at myself. I've stopped putting myself down and saying things like 'I'll never lose the weight.' Now I say, 'when I get to my goal weight'. It has really changed my whole outlook! So I totally understand where you are coming from.
Keep reading and keep up the good work! I know I will!

I thought it was a great activity when he had us go back and change the negative inner dialogue statements into more positive comments. I am trying to remember, before the poisonous inner dialogue begins to creep in again, to change my thinking.
I feel that this entire battle with weight loss is truly mental. You can play with the numbers all you want, but until things are right in your mind, you're really only spinning your wheels. Fixing the inside will change the outside.

There is proof in that with so many of the people who have the gastic bypass and then gain it all back again. I am not saying that is true with people who only have 5 to 25 lbs to lose but for obese people I truly believe that you have to fix the inside to change the outside. I have been attempting to do it on my own, but I think that Dr. Phil is very enlightening and can help me make better progress.

I've been working my way through Dr Phil for about two weeks now and am thrilled with how little effort it is taking to eat well! I have not craved or eaten anything counterproductive (I did fend off TOM with a fat free revel but at 100 cals, I wasn't worried).
I am either at key 5 or 6 and he is just starting to talk about food and most of it is stuff we already know. Only now, I have the behavioral understanding to help the food part along.
I am back in the field this week up in NOrthern Saskatchewan but have a little old laptop for company so I can check in in the evenings (actually so my office can get me to do even more work) . I still plan to read a little bit of Dr Phil every night to keep me on track here. I also brought a toaster oven and real food to the hotel with me so I wont be tempted by the fast food restaurants nearby (apparently the hunters and fishers who visit this place really love their fast food).
Have to go and find a place to sit and eat dinner now.
CHeers :-)

I would never say a word against Dr. Phil. Richard Simmons got the same flack when he started, and I think he, too, recognised that a lot of overweight people have emotional issues. I remember him putting his arms around the women he was helping and them dissolving into tears because someone was finally listening to them and taking them seriously and not just telling them to stop eating.
There are people in my immediate family who have gained weight after emotional trauma and they can't lose it because they're not yet ready to examine the real reasons.
I give Dr. Phil a lot of credit for helping people who struggle with weight. He's been there himself and he knows what it's like.

Niki,
You need to touch base with one of the "fishers." Between their catch and your toaster oven, there's nothing that you can't do!
