As requested, I will put up a progress report about Dr. Phil's book.
Please keep in mind that I am giving this a serious effort and really want to see how this plays out for me. Therefore, I would appreciate keeping any negative comments and such to a minimum if you absolutely HAVE to say something :-)
I am reading it slowly as there are exercises and stuff where you have to sit and think about your situation and rigth it down. I am roughly half way through the book and am finding the experience eye-opening.
Of the four 'keys' (there are seven in the book) I have been through so far, none of them have focused on what to eat or what not to eat, but rather on WHY we eat. How we are sabatoging our efforts, what we are using food to substitute, emotion wise, etc. Looking at myself this way, I am seeing a lot of what I was doing that was counter-productive.
For each key there are a number of 'internal audits' where the book asks you questions and you try to answer them as honestly as possible, then you go through the answers and it shows you how you are inhibiting your weight loss efforts. By seeing that, you become aware of it and can avoid it.
It's hard to be more specific right now as the book is sitting on my kitchen table and I am at work, but I am really finding the book useful. Since I started reading it a week and a half ago, I haven't binged, snacked or even wanted to cheat. My aunt dropped in to visit on my regular weigh-in day and she usually brings an extra couple pounds with her so I haven't seen a change in the numbers yet, but that isn't bothering me either right now.
One of the first things they go over is to ask yourself when you are reaching for the cookie if you reallly want the cookie; if eating the cookie is really in your best interest; and if the cookie will protect your health. THat has been very helpful for me when I have felt the urge to snack on something.
One of these days when I get organized enough, i will grab the book and give a more detailed overview of it, but I hope this helps :-)
Cheers,
Niki

Niki, I am going to get that book and read it.........I find that Dr. Phil hits home alot for me and I am reading Self Matters right now. I put it down for a while because it makes you bring up old childhood memories that are hard to deal with for me, but I know that if I keep on with it that it will really help me alot. I think it is great that the book is doing you good and making you think about your food choices. I'll let you know when I get it and get started on it. I wish you the best!

Thanks to both of you!! I'm looking forward to finding out how to fix the emotional part of overeating. It's one subject that not many books deal with.

I know it's becoming pretty unpopular to appreciate Dr. Phil but I really do. I just ordered his book self matters. If I could afford the man I would move him in to my house for a month LOL.
I think he's great... whatever works!

Niki,
I have also been reading Dr. Phil's new book, started Sunday night. I am on the second key to success right now. Very interesting, definitely all about the mental aspects of losing weight (is there really any other aspect?).

I agree with you about the 'unpopular' view. I have always found Dr. Phil trustworthy and I'm not sure why. He seems sincere about helping people and not about making money by helping people.
I've also just had my first big 'test' of this thinking. A couple girls in the office here wanted donuts and were going around collecting support for getting some (there are only 5 of us in the office right now). I objected but they still got some. A dozen donuts for the staff (for 5 people).
I have never been able to refuse donuts, or if I did manage it, i felt restricted and unhappy about it. Today, I don't care. I don't want any and I don't really care that they are sitting there in the kitchen. I am actually quite surprised at this lack of interest I am experiencing but I like it!
:-)

It's funny how your mind changes like that. I remember once talking to a thin lady and she was saying how she had forgotten to eat all day (this is like 4:00 PM). I was thinking that's impossible. Hell, I'm figuring what I'm gonna eat for dinner while I' eating lunch.
But now, sometimes, that happens (apparently not often enough).
I intend to live forever.....So far so good!

To be honest I decided to dislike Dr. Phil before I ever saw him on TV. Not because he makes money by giving advice on TV but because he was originally associated with Oprah, who annoys me and pretty much every other man on the face of the earth.
I saw him on CNN and he seemed pretty reasonable. He seemed to think that most people already know that eating less and/or exercising more is how you lose weight and the real trick is figuring out how to do that. I cannot argue with that. I sometimes think we spend too much time on this board discussing the biological aspects of weight loss when the real challenge is psychological.
He also mentioned doing some things like removing tempting high calorie food from your house that I had already done.
Let us know what you think of the ideas in the book when you finish it.
