Research shows that all high-protein/low carb diets are not successful for long-term weight loss and can be dangerous for your health. Atkins diet is high in cholesterol and saturated fat that can cause heart attacks and strokes.

Many people do lose a lot of weight on high protein diets in a short time, and that is a great motivation booster, but unfortunately the initial rapid weight loss on such diets is mostly water and lean muscle tissue, but not fat. The weight lost on Atkins-type diets is usually gained back just as quickly as it was lost.

A healthy diet is based on the US Food Pyramid:
http://www.nal.usda.gov:8001/py/pmap.htm

Bread and pasta do not make you fat - it's the high-fat toppings and sauces (such as butter, cheese sauce, etc.) that do.

Hi Julie,
I tried it for a couple of days and quit because I couldn't take eating like that. It made me feel horrible and sick to my stomach. What has worked best for me is just really watching what I eat, I eat a lot of whole grains, veggies, and lean protein. I look at all the labels, watching for saturated fat content and sugar and sodium. In the morning I eat a bowl of oatmeal with fruit like blueberries or a half a grapefruit. My biggest downfall is sugar, so I just try to stay away from it altogether. I exercise at least 5 days a week, 3 days of cardio, and 2 - 3 days strength training. I feel so good especially after exercising. I have lost about 24 pounds total since I really got serious about my weight loss goals l about 4 months ago. It seems not very much, but I have somewhat changed the shape of my body, losing fat and gaining muscle and firming up in different areas. Keeping a food diary really helps in changing eating habits. You can do it, it seems hard at first, but then you start seeing the results and it makes it all worth it. The best of luck to you. Have a great day! Jill

Julie

I am a big calorie and fat counter. I try to stay away from simple carbs like white rice, white bread etc. I choose brown rice, whole wheat bread and whole wheat pasta as well. I also have gotten hooked on tofu and got a cookbook just on vegetarian dishes even though I'm not a vegan, and there are great recipes on the web. I keep my fridge stocked with fruits and veggies, and prepare them ahead of time so I can grab them easily and not go for something I shouldn't. I keep my calories at about 1200 a day now, hopefully to speed up the weight loss. I also keep bags of frozen veggies in my freezer, there are so many yummy varieties and makes it easier to throw a healthier meal together. We eat a lot of chicken and fish and limit the red meat. But I do give myself treats now and then, because if you forbid yourself something it only makes you want it more, and will most likely set you up to fail. Another thing I do is eat smaller meals more often so I don't get hungry, a lot of people here divide their calories into 5 small meals a day. I hope this helps, and keep us posted!! Take Care! Jill

Julie,

To figure out how many calories you need to eat to lose weight, use the calculator on this site: http://www.practicalweightloss.com/nutrition/calories-calculator-women.html

You should get around 20% of your calories from fat. To translate fat calories into fat grams, divide fat calories by 9 (1 gram of fat = 9 calories)

Hi Julie Mc-

Melanie and Jill G have pretty much covered the change of lifestyle suggestions pretty thoroughly. But, I'd like you to know that you're not alone in the disappointing results you had with the Atkin's Diet. Yes, it does work for some people, but not for all it seems. A friend from work and I joined in with the rest of the crowd at work a couple years ago, but while they dropped pounds incredible, we barely budged. And yes, we followed it faithfully, and our urine ketones were always positive as well.

Hope this makes you feel better a little better.

Michelle

I feel alot better to know i am not alone,i have started back on a normal eating plan and back training and i feel alot better.I have a long way to go but i will be so proud of my self to think all the hard work i have put in to get a nice figure, i have thought long and hard and if there was an easy way to lose weight we would not be on this site apart from the fitness side as we would not have the battle of the bulge. Thanks again and keep up the with the good advice.I really enjoy reading all the diffrent things on here because you can pick things.Keep up the good work everyone.

I tried the diet. The first week I lost five pounds. The second week I lost about four pounds. Over the course of the next two weeks I had lost a total of about fifteen pounds. The key to any diet is plenty of water and exercise. It works if you do enough exercise.

Actually white rice and pasta are complex carbohydrates. For optimal health, all complex carbohydrates should be avoided, and your carbohydrate calories should come from fresh fruit and raw vegetables.

Grain products can be sedating and addictive. Wheat contains opioids, which if you ever tried to not eat wheat for awhile, you notice addictive-like cravings. Do and internet search on "wheat opioids" to get more information.

This information is not scientifically sound.

Don't take my word (or all the articles on the internet) about this. There are some simple experiments you can try for yourself.

Suppose your typical meal is 500 calories. One day before lunch, write down how you feel in terms of energy. Now eat a meal of 500 calories worth of your favorite fruit (use fitday to see how much to eat). 60 minutes after eating, write down how you feel again, in terms of your energy.

Now on another day, to the same thing, except replace 500 calories worth of your favorite fruit with 500 calories worth of your favorite wheat based bread (use whole grain, cracked wheat, wheat berry, etc). Also don't consume any caffeine based drinks, as this will ruin the experiment.

Compare the after meal results of the 2 days with regards to your energy levels.

A second experiment is this: Try not eating any grain based products for 2 weeks. This includes wheat, rice, corn, oats, millet, quinoa, spelt, barley, etc. Make sure you are eating enough carbohydrates using fitday. At the end of the experiment, are you craving grains?

Don't do the Atkins diet. There are plenty of websites (like www.atkinsdietalert.org) that will tell you about the dangers of this diet. In addition to the problems already mentioned, this diet can lead to kidney and liver damage.

Perhaps you shouldn't do the first experiment I mentioned. 500 calories of bread contains quite a bit of the carcinogen acrylamide. You can do a search on the internet for "acrylamide bread" (Don't type in the quotes).
