Its crunch time at school. Stress galore. I don't feel like I have time to grocery shop. Which means I can't prepare my own food. Even if I had food I would feel like I was wasting time by preparing it. So I eat donuts and drink coffee........all day long. Pudgy will be my name soon. No more Ang, just pudge.

I hear coffee helps us lose weight. Donuts are surprisingly low in calories compared to muffins and bagels. I found the nutrition website for Dunkin Donuts and most donuts average 200 calories, compared to a muffin which came in at 500 calories.

Ang, weight or no weight, not taking time to feed you mind healthful food is not helping your studies and makes more stress. Its very difficult for the brain to focus and recall information when it dosent get enough protien. It sounds like you're really are being hard on your self. You may want to consider some hard boiled eggs or cheese or nuts, almonds or even beef jerkey. WATER will help you flush the toxins--- if you must drink coffee still drink water. Even if your eating donuts try eating some protien at some time during the day. Almonds & veggies like carrots, and cucumbers etc can be kept with you at all times. You might want to try it for a week and see how much less stress youll feel. Let me know..Deb

F.Y. I. caffeine has been shown to elevate insulin. Among other things, insulin triggers the body to store fat and increases appetite. So, coffee might not be such a good drink for dieters.

insulin DOES NOT trigger the body to store fat at all..i dont know where u got that from...insulin and glycogen are mans best friend with losing weight/weight training...caffeine is a stimulant...ever heard of ECA stacks? the C stands for caffeine, which are in stacks like hydroxycut, xenedrine etc etc....as controversial as those supplements are, they do work in 99% of people...so how on earth could a stimulant send the body to store fat?....do a little more research i think, you must be confused with something.

I heard it from my endocrinologist. An endocrinologist is a specialist in the endocrin system (hormones, etc). Insulin falls under this category. I think I will stick with his advice. Weight lifting information is not reliable enough for me.

Dear Gym:
I wanted to make sure that I was remembering what my endocrinologist said correctly. I used a search engine and pulled up something from the first site I saw which was, ironically, a weight lifting site. You might be interested in the 5th paragraph. The affects of caffeine on insulin are found in the New Englad Journal of Medicine. Happy weight lifting/weight loss to you.

The Anabolic Power Of Insulin
by John Barton
Amazing gains in ripped muscle mass and the most incredible pumps of your life are guaranteed when you harness the anabolic power of Insulin! Revolutionary new scientific formulation makes the effects of insulin as potent as testosterone for rapid gains in muscularity and strength.
For rapid muscle mass and strength gains, testosterone is one of the most anabolic hormones in the world. High testosterone levels (whether from steroids, prosteroids or prohormones) are responsible for stimulating anabolic activity, which results in a huge, ripped, rock hard physique. But, testosterone is not the only anabolic hormone that determines how much muscle and strength you will develop. Insulin is the forgotten anabolic hormone, but is the key to maximizing muscle growth and strength increases.
Everybody knows about testosterone and its potent effects. But few are aware of how critical insulin...and more specifically insulin management is. Insulin is responsible for transporting nutrients into the bloodstream to guarantee maximum absorption and utilization of any and all supplements (legal and illegal). Insulin also intensifies the delivery of carbohydrates, and supplements like creatine, glutamine, and others into the muscle cells for amazing pumps and muscle fullness.
You may be familiar with the term “insulin spike”. It refers to a rapid rise in insulin levels in the body usually brought on by a concentrated dose of simple sugars, found in most high-carb creatine transport products. An insulin spike is necessary to carry and deliver nutrients into the bloodstream and muscle cells. So far, so good? Insulin spikes are great and effective.. with no downsides, right? Well, not exactly.
The problem with insulin spikes is that they can also cause excess carbs (carbs that aren’t completely metabolized) to be stored as insulin fat.
Insulin is a powerful anabolic hormone, as long as you control how it affects your body. If you manage insulin properly you can gain 10-20 pounds of muscle mass in 4-6 weeks, but if you don’t you can easily pack on some serious fat. Top pro and amateur bodybuilders have used injectable forms of insulin in their stacks as a means to accelerate muscular weight gains in the off season.

The part about the muscle building in 6 weeks, I have no idea about. I am just a beginner in the weight lifting department. What I did find out from a whole host of resources (from Harvard University's website to a multitude of others) is that what I told you originally is correct. Insulin will trigger the body to store fat, and caffeine spikes insulin to the point where the body will react in that way. That was the intent of the message. Nothing more. Use caffeine if you want to. I was just trying to be helpful.

This advice is in line with what my endocrinologist told me. The protein in the eggs, nuts, etc will keep your insulin levels in check. One good side effect of this is that you will not have "rebound hunger" which is what happens when you get too much sugar in the bloodstream.
