I am sick of being unhappy with my eating habits at the end of each night. Why am I behaving the way I am?? I can't get a hold on my habits, for some reason. Every time I've gone out to eat lately (past 3 weeks at least), I've given myself every good reason to eat beyond what would normally satisfy me. I do well during the day but it is always at night that I over-do it. I feel like I've gained a bit of weight and I don't want to step on the scale until I feel like I'm back to a comfort zone. Argh. I'm still exercizing, which is always a constant, but it's my eating habits that have to improve.
Tomorrow is my start. I am going to be more conscious of myself for a week. A week is a reasonable goal. Actually, right now is my start, but tomorrow is when the real challenge begins.
Any advice would be appreciated so much.

I feel your frustration Tara...I`m snapping out of it myself(at least I tell myself!)...
Today is the start of a new day and we are going to pull thru it with decent marks me and you!
The only thing I may suggest is to write your cals and see if you may need to distribute better during the day and save about 200-300 cals for the evening...It could be that your cals for the day are low and then your body rebels at nightime...
I was doing good with the food untile a couple days ago and I know that onles I get back on the wagon with work outs I will have problem with the food so TODAY IS THE DAY...Let`s do this together...G

I think we've all felt the same way, at least I have, many, many times. The key is being able to stick with the diet long enough to lose a few pounds, which kicks in the feelings that help you keep eating less, which causes you to lose a few more pounds and then it gets a little easier.
If you are feeling deprived of eating what you want then start to count calories - right now, and eat what you want, don't worry about it being a more healthy diet, try to limit the amount you eat, but eat what you want. Do that this week. If possible, save more calories for night time eating and then eat what you want, but count the calories and set a limit.
Just remember that everyone here has the exact same feelings that you expressed. That's why a support group is important. We've all "been there, done that".

Tara, maybe you are not eating enough during the day and or just "making due" until your evening meal. For me it's the opposite, I've got the food thing down and have for along time - now it's the exercise...
First - Don't go out to eat!
Second - Eat satisfying meals all day long, just some in smaller calorie increments.
Maybe this will help with your evening eating. I love to cook so maybe that's why the food part is easy for me (and it makes it hard sometimes too). Now I have the Eating for Life cookbook and I think it's awesome.
You can check it out at www.eatingforlife.com The book is more than just a cook book. It's very motivating and Bill Phillips explains everything about how to eat, why to eat that way etc...He does not promote counting calories and that's about the only think I disagree with him on. I think it's important to count AT LEAST in the beginning. All of the meals I've made so far have been really, really good and satisfying. The book includes dinner, dessert, lunch, mid-meals and nutrition shakes. Just awesome.

I suggest you jump on the scale NOW...and not wait until you are "back to a comfort zone" (whatever that is?).
If you get on the scale you will find out one of 3 things:
1) You've gained more weight than you thought and you will "shock" yourself into becoming more determined to get back onto your program
2) You will weigh the same, and you will relieve the stress you are building up inside and you won't have to "medicate" your stress with food anymore and can get back on program.
3) You will have lost some weight and the sheer joy will accelerate you back on track with your program
If you DON'T get on the scale, the fear, stress and anxiety will continue to mount as you don't meet your "imaginary comfort zone" and you are setting yourself up for continued lapses and re-lapses.
Time to get tough with the line of crap your "inner fat person" is trying to feed you about getting into a comfort zone.
Be Strong! Don't be afraid to jump on that scale, draw the line, and move on with your program NOW!

Tara stop beating yourself up. You can do it.
Why are you going out to dinner each night? Do you go with others? Can you chooze WHERE you eat? If you can chooze then plan ahead, chooze a place where you can get what you need.
When your down don't make your goals so long range. A week is way to long. Set your goal for each day. Plan it out in advance. If that's to hard take it hour by hour until your back in the groove.
Were looking forward to hearing how wonderfully you're doing.

I agree that you should be brave and get on the scale--knowledge is power. I also agree that if you're feeling deprived, calorie counting is a great way to go. If you count, it's not so much what you eat, but how much of it. That's worked really well for me--low cal stuff I like, and a few higher calorie treats that I REALLY like, as long as I'm within my limits. I'm kind of in the same boat as you--I'm having a really hard time weaning myself off a maintenance diet that is holding me steady at 10-15 pounds more than I want to weigh, and getting back to a lower calorie diet where I could lose those pounds. Let's face it, eating more is fun. I'm trying to gradually ramp down--maybe that approach would work for you as well. Good luck with whatever you decide to do--it sounds like your ready to go for it, so--go for it!

Hi, I would not go and jump on the scale as if you have gained weight you will be upset and go and eat more. Forget the past, forgive yourself and go back to sensible reasonable low calorie eating for the next week or two before you jump on the scale. I always recommend the book "Diets Don't Work" by Howard Swartz as it is the only book that I have ever read that taught me how to eat smaller portions and be satisfied with them.. He teaches a person to learn to slow down and enjoy food more while eating less of it. I don't believe everything the book says as he says you can learn to be thin eating whatever you want while only eating when you are really hungry.... I believe this to a point, but think one needs to watch the hidden fats in the foods that add up the extra calories in a hurry. Another great book on motivation and staying on the right track is "The Thin Book" by Jeane Eddy Westin. Both of these books have helped me more than any other I have ever read on getting your head in the right place to live at a better weight. Like the others said, stop beating yourself up. No one said it was easy....everyone else here has the same problem. I think you can find them at Amazon.com. Great books to pick up and read out of every day as they help you keep the right mind set to be successful. Good Luck, Lesley
