Another thing I wanted to share!
I took my daughter to her Endocrinologist for an appointment and he told me not to put her on any diet (she is 13),and never nag her about exercise or food (What?? Me??? Nag???). All he wanted her to do for the next six months was to eliminate every drink that had over 5 calories. He recommended water. He told her that soft drinks have an enormous amount of sodium, which we already knew. And he asked her "Why do you think they put that much sodium in their drinks?" "It is not for the taste", he said. Then he told her, "They put all that salt in their drinks to stimulate thirst.' 'So what happens is they have to put in excessive amounts of sugar to cover the sodium taste.' 'Then you drink it and it tastes good and quenches your thirst FOR A FEW MINUTES.' 'Then in about 15 minutes you are beginning to dehydrate as a result of the salt you just consumed and you crave another soft drink." Like I said, I always knew that there is a lot of salt in those drinks, but I never considered WHY. When I thought of the deliberate plotting of the drink makers to get my money at the expense of my daughter' s health and well-being it made me MAD! Now I any time I want one I think of that. By the way, my daughter had gained weight steadily since she was five years old. (I am talking about excessive weight gain.) And she has PCOS which affects weight gain/loss in a major way. The year prior to our visit to the doctor she had gained over 20 pounds. Since drinking water only (well, she has had juice a few times and VERY little soft drinks) she has not only NOT gained weight, but actually managed to lose a little. She hasn't done anything else either!
I know everybody has their "issue", but I this has become a major issue of mine!

I am wondering if your daughter was drinking "regular" or "diet" soft drinks. Did the doctor mention that the extra sodium was also present in diet drinks?

She was drinking regular soft drinks. He did mention the sodium in the diet drinks, but for the purposes of calories, sodium doesn't matter. But for the purpose of staying well-hydrated (which is very important for anyone, especially an overweight person) the sodium does matter. He recommended she stick to water for the most part. He said to not even drink fruit juices. Instead, eat the whole fruit. Some of the diet drinks have little or no sodium. Diet Rite drinks come to mind. (I don't know if they have them everywhere or not, but the white grape is ok.)
