I really hate this new carb-hype stuff, it makes me paranoid to eating anything now! I read an article yesterday warning people to stay away from all these 'low-carb' foods and that they're hoping this latest craze doesn't last too long, lol.
Here's a clip from that article:
"Low-carb almost always means high price. Low-carb beers cost more than lite. One low-carb breakfast cereal costs nearly four times as much per serving as regular cereals. Atkins breads cost twice as much as most regular breads. And most low-carb foods sacrifice a lot in taste and texture. (Not the candies, apparently, where chocolate flavors mask a lot.) Maybe this is a good thing—people will eat less of these foods, and the fad won’t last.
In the meantime, our advice: Don’t be fooled by low-carb foods. There’s no evidence that they’ll help you lose weight. They are not significantly more nutritious or less caloric than many regular foods. And they eat up food dollars better spent on plain good healthy foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables. "
Anyway, do any of you watch carbs? I've been staying away from too much pasta and white breads, etc., but I find that many of my calories per day are still coming from carbs because I eat oatmeal every morning (27g) and a few times a week I'll have a Slimfast for lunch (42g). So before 12 or 1pm, 60 some percent of my calories have already come from carbohydrates.

This is where my problem comes into, but the carbs in mine are from healthy food. But like you they have got me all messed up on the carb thing! So I just count the calories and eat the foods I know is healthy. There are so many different diet plans low carb/low fat etc, nobody knows what diet is right anymore, but every dr I have been to, just told me to watch my calorie intake....So that is what I do plus cut out majority of sweets like my Dr. Peppers and Mellow Yellows, I have water and Diet Dr. Pepper.....

That's what my doctor told me, that it all boils down to calories, regardless of what you eat.
But then you read all this junk about carbs causing your insulin levels to freak out, which in turn causes this problem or that problem and causes you to gain weight, blah blah blah. I get so tired of the up's and down's - one day they're telling you to load up on carbs, the next they're saying STOP!
I've always gone by the philosphy that if you eat healthy foods and limit fats and sugars not to worry about everything else. But these days it gets harder and harder to stick by that.

I agree with just watch the overall daily calories as long as the foods you do eat are healthy foods, which means keep the fat and sugar low, too much fat and sugar is not good even for those who don't need to lose weight.
There is a regional company that makes a bread called "whole grain no-sugar-added" which is only 50 calories a slice, so you get the benefit of the whole grain without the higher calories and negative aspects of processed grain bread.
I use Smucker's sugar-free (Splenda sweetened) strawberry preserves (only 10 calories a tablespoon) and SmartBeat spread (only 20 calories a tablespoon) to make jelly toast using the above mentioned bread.
I would not worry about going low-carb, a healthy diet needs some carbs, it is the fat content (and sugar) that needs to be kept low.
Eat healthy foods, watch the overall daily calories, exercise regularly, that is what has worked for me !

Thanks, Gary. Your post was a refreshing change from all of the CARBS ARE EVIL! STAY AWAY FROM THEM! preaches we hear day in and day out :)
That Smartbeat - someone else was telling me about that, is it good? I haven't tried it yet, I've been using butter spray and fat-free butter spread, both made by I Can't Believe It's Not Butter. I thought for sure I'd take one taste of the fat-free spread and chuck it in the garbage, but it's not too bad.
