Do you count liquid calories too?
Author: LeeV

Like sodas, juices, alcoholic drinks, etc.

I'm just a little concerned about my nutrition on some days because, as I've stated before, I'll have a few drinks in the evening with a friend of mine. And I count in those calories with my daily intake. So basically what calories I'm drinking in alcohol, I'm losing in food.

So on the nights I have my drinks, should I go ahead and eat my 1500 calories (or at least close to it) in food anyway? Because I've noticed that on the nights my friend comes over and I know I'll be drinking, I'm only eating about 900-1000 calories in food because I'm terrified of going over 1500 and gaining weight. I know I should be eating at least 1200 in food, which I think I'm going to start doing, but on the nights I have drinks I'll be going over 1500. Sooo... should I worry about that putting weight on me?

And please don't ask me to give up my drinks, my friend and I have had this little 'tradition' of ours for years and I don't see it ending anytime soon.

Hmmm...I think it depends. If you are just a having a "few" drinks and maybe only once or twice a week, then I think you shouldn't count them in. But if you are having "quite a few" and doing this more than once or twice a week, I'd say add it in.

I think it's okay in *moderation*. I doubt a few drinks are gonna cause you to gain weight or mess up your "diet" but it's when you take it too far when there's a problem (same goes with sweets really). I say enjoy your "free" drinks and don't let it bother you.

That's JMHO!! =o )

We usually get together a few times a week. Some weeks we drink every get-together, some weeks not. But we can put away the alcohol, that's for sure. Not to the point of being stinking drunk (I have a son to take care of and refuse to lose my composure) but sometimes we get to talking and laughing (we've been best friends since I was 18 years old) and don't even pay any attention to how much we're drinking, we just make one drink after another, lol.

What lushes!

Well, if you think the cals are going to harm your daily intake....how about averaging in maybe 3 or so drinks on that day (considering you will probably drink that much) and make the others free?!! That way if you average those in earlier in the day, you can still get more calories from food since you won't be afraid of going over. Does that make sense? *lol* Sorry, can't put into words what I'm trying to say *lol* Hopefully you get me! =o)

I understand what you're saying :)

I don't drink beer or wine, I drink canadian whisky. Which is about 69 calories per ounce (one shot). However, I make my drinks pretty weak, so I don't always use a whole ounce for one drink. But I still figure 69 calories per drink. And if I have, say, 6 drinks in a night, that's over 400 calories!

Man, I guess I didn't realize how many calories was in whiskey!! I'm not much of a drinker. I was when I was younger (who wasn't, right?! he he) but since I got pregnant with my 1st child, it was pretty much a dead end after that. Inbetween my oldest and youngest, I did drink some (Zima and Wine Coolers...the "girly" beers as my husband says) but since I got pregnant with my youngest, I haven't had ANY alcohol (besides in marinades). I breastfeed too, so that's another reason why. Plus, my husband just recently stopped and so it's kinda like "What's the point?"

Anyways--I'm rambling. I think you should do what feels right to you. I still eat some things that I shouldn't but heck, I'm just human and I'm no superwoman and I know overall I have changed my eating habits for the better and that makes me feel good.

I used to drink like a fish when I was younger. Then, like you, I got pregnant with my son and all of that stopped for more than 9 months, I didn't drink the whole time I was pregnant and while I was breastfeeding. These days I don't drink as much as I used to, but I still love my occasional drinks in the evenings with my friend. If it wasn't for her I probably wouldn't drink much at all because the only time my husband drinks is on Saturday's when he's watching football with his buddy Sean. But it's sort of always been a 'habit' with me and my friend Kathy. She comes over and we're like, "hey! let's make a drink!" and it's all downhill from there, lol.

I would count them and compensate by eating less.

While it is true that going over your calorie limit a few times a week is not the end of the world it is also true that neither is going a little under 1200 Calories a few times a week.

LeeV, darling ... you know I appreciate you very much. But honey. A calorie is a calorie is a calorie.
But ya know ... a rum and diet coke is only 75 or 100 cals. A Coors lite is something like 110. Run, jog, skip, do a little dance, make a little ..... hm mm mm ...

I agree with Doug. I count the calories and compensate if necessary by eating less food. On the weekends though, I go over my limit, but get right back on track Monday. I lost weight doing this and I'm now maintaining by doing this.

Now who's the one that's been telling YOU to add your alcohol calories in with your daily limit? Hmmmmmmm? ME, silly! So yes, I know even liquid calories count :)

I was just wondering if anyone else bothered to count them.
