Well, I tried a new class today, called Power Pump. It's brand new at my YMCA, and even the instructor is new. It started off with Tae Bo/kickboxing type aerobics, which I like, but only 30 minutes of it, which is less cardio than I usually do. Then went to the 45 minute weighlifting portion. It was okay, but I wasn't sure how many reps we would do, and she suggested keeping the weights low, until we knew what we could handle, and got a "feel" for the class. Anyway, I don't feel like I got a good workout today. I know it will be better next time because I know what to expect now, and I know which exercises I need to increase the weights on, but it's still disappointing. I know I didn't burn as many calories, & I felt like I wasted my time. But sitting here typing this, I'm realizing, I sure am SORE!! Maybe it was better than I thought. Maybe I'll get some more exercise in tonight.

Like you said, it will be better next time you do it! Maybe you could go for a power walk tonight!

Sounds good enough to me. Also, if you are sore today, you will probably be more sore tomorrow! For me, its worse the second or even third day! But if you are sore, then you definitely worked hard!!!!

I am so impressed with your willingness to try new classes. There are a ton of classes at my gym, yet I can say I've only ever been to one class, spinning. There is something slightly intimidating to trying something new in front of others. I'm working on it!

It sounds like a class that you could tailor to your needs. Next time you'll know how hard you can push and just think of how sore you'll be then ;-P
Maybe those light weights weren't all bad.
I've been struggling with ineffective workouts with a co-worker of mine. She wants to walk after work, but she walks sooooooooo slow. It's like taking a liesurly strole. I want more of an increase heart rate and a good sweat. So, I can empathize. Although, for me, there is no soreness afterward :-(

Thanks for the encouragement everybody! I love to try new classes and workouts, but only because I get bored really easily. I want to try a spinning class next, and there's a Pilates class starting in October. I should be doing yoga, 'cause I have no flexibility, but I know it's not great for weight loss, so I just can't get too excited. Anyway, I'll get to know every part of my gym, and figure out what works for me! One thing I haven't tried out yet is the sauna and whirlpool. A few more Power Pump classes and I might have to...
Smiles!

I guess it wasn't so bad after all, it just didn't get me as pumped and sweaty as usual, but now that I know what to expect I can really tough it up! And I'm terribly sore today, in places I'm embarrassed to mention, so something I did was effective.
Spinning is an exercise bike class. It always seemed like it would be boring to me, but everyone I've talked to seems to enjoy it. The resistance changes, and the music is good, but I've heard the comraderie enjoyed by the participants is the best part. You go at your own pace. I don't know much more about it since I've never taken it. If I ever do, I'll report back. Maybe someone else on the board who has can comment?

I enjoyed the couple of spinning classes I took this summer. They are definitely intense. I hear trainers at my gym telling others it's the highest calorie burning class they offer, and I believe them! I enjoy the shorter classes, 30-45 minutes. I don't think I could handle the full hour long class yet. There's a definite group dynamic to the whole thing, and the music helps keep you going.
