Forget dietary suppliments. Losing weight is math.
Calories in must be less than calories used.
Whatever way you get to that.. you will lose weight.

depends on the supplement...i will take a multi vitamin and protein shake purely because a multi covers my bases if im missing something and the protein because i would have trouble getting enough for muscle to grow without it....just makes things easier

As far as food replacements to lose weight, I still ask the question "Why not eat real food? Even at any level of caloric intake the food is always the better choice. Anyone on a reduced calorie diet for any real length of time will benefit from taking a Multi since its harder to to get enough nutrients because of reduction in volume and variety, but really at no more than 100% of RDA unless your doctor perscribes something different.
Anyone losing more than two pounds per week of weight can benefit from eating extra protein. Normally protein is not utilized to any great extent for energy when calories are adequate to maintain, but in a negative calorie balance protein goes toward energy production. When the body has to use this as energy there is not enough amino acids in the nitrogen pool for all of the repair and maintenance and will rob them from skeletal muscle. Anyone losing weight through diet will lose muscle. I recently read that as one advances past the two pound a week rate, the rate of muscle loss increases dramaticlly. Add that loss up over 6 to 10 months or longer and it becomes more critical to eat more protein and do weight bearing exercises. It has also been shown that protein supplementation reduces muscle wasting in bedridden adults, and those suffering from severe trauma like burn victims.
Hopes this helps, sorry if this is more than you wanted, but I happen to be doing some serious reading, and I covered the protein two days ago.

I think suplements can be great, depending on how much you are working out, what you are eating etc...I use protein shakes that can be a quick meal or just when I don't have time for anything else.
