One new thing my trainer wants me to do are deadlifts w/a 30 lb. bar. I've had some lower back problems in the past, nothing really major, have been to a chiro. and a bone doctor, had all kinds of tests run, it's not a pinched nerve. They really couldn't tell me what it was but my question is this...
If deadlifts are slightly aggravating my back, should I quit doing them all together or just lighten the weight, maybe to 20? Or is this a result of just a weak back and I should keep it up to strengthen it?
Thanks!

I would definitely lower the weight. You can always increase it after you build up your strength.
Deadlifts are great to strengthen your back. I am finishing a 4 week rotation that had quite a few of them. It is a great exercise, but pay very close attention to form, tighten your abs, and breathe.

You can't do much damage with only twenty pounds as long as you have someone there to watch your form. Having a knowledgable spotter for an exercise like deadlifts is essential. Don't let your form lack.
Have you tried doing back extensions? They are a safe and effective way to build the lower back muscles.

I am an advanced exerciser and I started with 10 lbs. My trainer was advanced and she used 10 lbs.
Take your time, and keep your back straight. You should feel it in your hamstrings.

u should feel it in your lower half, your hammys will feel stiff legged deadlifts, that is different exercise...u shouldnt feel it in your back with deadlifts..u lift the weight with ur legs..i would check your form because a sore back is a sign of poor form.
