Well, now I remember why I never was very good at running. It is because it is hard on the body and causes pain. I was getting pretty good at it too. I could run on the treadmill for 2.5 miles straight and average a little over 10 minute miles. Then this weekend, we went to DC and did lots of walking. On Sunday, my achilles tendon hurt so bad I could hardly walk.
I've researched some exercises to do that will strengthen the calf muscle and help support the tendon (after it heals), but it looks like my running is done for awhile. I switched over to the stationary bicycle, but it just doesn't feel as good as a run. I'm bummed.
When I look back over my exercise history, I noticed that an injury would stop my routine and I would fall back into old patterns -- never getting back fully in the swing. It WILL NOT happen this time. I will continue to go Tae Kwon Do at least three times per week and continue with the gym three times per week, even if I can't run. THIS IS FRUSTRATING - but I'm going to keep going.
Any good ideas for cardio that is very easy on the ankles?

Do you have access to an elliptical? It's very easy on everything.
Plus, don't forget about weight lifting.....you can bump that up a notch until you can run again. I know what you mean about the bike. I had some surgery in February and that's about all I could do was the bike and weights (upper body), but I stuck with it and as soon as I could I was right back on the elliptical.
Stick with something so you don't lose the momentum.

Yes, I have access to an elliptical but feel really weird on it. I find that I end up resting my elbows on the bars on the side because I feel like a bobber floating on the water if I don't. I'm not sure how effective the workout is if I'm only working my legs and resting on my elbows.
How long does it take to get used to those contraptions? I've read that many people here swear by them.
As for weights, I'm still doing that too. I usually go 30 minutes cardio and 30 minutes weights three times per week. Tae Kwon Do is a fairly good workout too as it helps with flexibility.
Guess I'm going to have to get in on that push up contest in another thread....

I love them! I have a lot of joint problems, so it's so easy on me when I have access to one (I definately cannot afford one)
The whole bobbing thing takes a bit to get used to. I just try and move my hips from side to side to compensate (Lol, it almost feels like doing a catwalk.)
You can always give it another try. Otherwise, there's really nothing I know of, other than a bike, that will be easy on you.
Good Luck!

I sort of took right to it. After a few minutes I was fine. Give it another try. They really are great and burn alot of calories. Now if the one you have is the kind with the arm thingys..well that may be another story. My cousin has that kind and it felt really weird...the one I have and here at the gym, they don't have those arm things and I prefer it that way.
Good luck with the push-ups. Maybe you can give Eric a run for his money.

Hey Don,
The first elliptical I bought came with a tape in which the instructor insisted begginers try to stay on the machine for twenty minutes. I worked out for about two minutes and spent the balance of the twenty balancing. It took a few days to go the while twenty, and then the progression was incredible. It probably took a month to get up to speed.
I do it to music and find it a great alternative to running as I walk all day for work.
Now I bike and elliptical.

I forgot to mention, thank you Eric for reminding me, the first time I got on the elliptical that I have at my house, I could only go for about 5 minutes and worked my way up to 20 minutes over several days.
