For those of you wanting to lower your sodium for whatever reason, you might want to check out the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). I recently had a scare with my kidneys but found out they are fine. Due to having been on Depo and probably high sodium intake I retain water more than I should. I've stopped the Depo and I watch my sodium more carefully now. My doctor actually recommeded I go on the DASH diet, even though I don't have high blood pressure.
When I was waiting on my test results (to see if I was dying from a kidney disease) I did some research. I decided to lose weight, feel more healthy and lower my sodium I would try a whole foods approach to my eating habits. By whole foods I mean non-packaged.
That's where the Food Saver comes in. I bought mine from an infomercial about three years ago. Now that have them at Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot and Lowes just to name a few stores.
Going whole foods, means alot more cooking. I use my Food Saver all the time. I grill chicken breasts about 4 at a time and vac lock them with the Food Saver. I sometimes will cook all day Saturday or Sunday and make meals on plastic plates and vac lock them. They stay good in the freezer for months.
I recenlty took out some turkey from this past Thanksgiving and it tasted just like it did that day. I made turkey salad, turkey sandwiches etc...
Hope this is useful to someone!

Hey, i have the worst kidneys in the world it seems like so i know where you are coming from. I havent tried the food saver thing but i'd like to have one. One thing i do and i know it irritates my hubby is that i dont cook with salt/sodium in any form that way i know im eating alot less of it. We do not eat chips not even the WOW thingys, i dont even bake with it. For the longest time Rian hated it but now he doesnt miss it and when someone asks for it or comments on why things dont taste like they should (ie no salt in mashed potatos or on other things) he says its cheaper to not have that than to take me to the ER every other day.........
Sorry but you probably already know about not eating cheddar cheese and American cheese very often and pain killers and things.... although i was told to limit my cranberry juice intake to about two glasses or less a day (even though its supposed to be good for bad kidneys) so that i didnt flush too much salt through there at a time and since the stuff that make the juice good for you can hurt the kidney very badly if you get things too high.....
Can you tell me more about DASH?
Love All
Stephy

Try this:

I clicked on the PDF file. It's 24 pages of lots of good information including receipes.
No, I don't eat cheese very often at all and I do know about painkillers. Lucky for me I can usually avoid taking them if I just wait the headache out. I ended up not have polycystic kidney disease. Sorry you have problems. It's a very scary thing, but I believe you can help your kidneys out a great deal with your diet. I did a tone of research while waiting on my test results. I was very scared. I'm happy that I don't have it, but at the same time sad because it increases the chance that one of my siblings will have it.

I am the only person in my family that has any problems with this although in Rians family there are quite a few mutations in thier kidneys.... he has 4 ueriters and his cousin on his moms side has 8 on one side and 5 or 7 on the other, so seths chances are really high to have problems there..... ill have to look up the polycystic kidney disease. Thanks so much for the link.

Well, don't let it scare you. It is I think 97% hereditary or maybe more. So, if you or your husband don't have it, he won't have it either. I think you would probably know if it ran in the family.
