 Cutting phase?

Anyone who understands BODYBUILDING type diets......I have read a lot on how bodybuilders diet etc. I don't know if they left it out or they just didn't use it, but I've seen some cutting phase diets, that don't include any protein supps. Bascically, they seem to get their protein from their food. I saw Jay Cutlers cutting diet, which is 2,800 calories. Yeah, a cutting diet of 2,800 cals! Anyways, I am about to go to a calorie restriction again, at 1500-1700, and I was wondering should I keep taking my protein powder, or just get my protein from my foods. Being that my cals are that low, I'm thinking eating whole foods, is the best thing to do, rather than get 130 cals from a protein shake. Any suggestions?

Derrick,

I'm not a body builder per se, but I am interested in building muscle ( and I mean alot of it), not just losing weight. I'm just using common sense here, BUT I would think it wouldn't matter where you get the protein from as long as you get it.

I've read all the post going back and fourth from you and the other guys and I've lost track on what you are trying to do exaclty, but I find that with a whey protein shake after my work out, it makes me feel so full, I actually have to make myself eat lunch. So, if 1500 - 1700 calories is a struggle for you, I don't know that it is...possibly a shake would help you feel fuller versus getting your protein from food only.

No, what I am speaking of right now, is that I'm going to start a cutting phase, and lower my calorie intake to around 1500-1700 a day, and if I should keep my whey protein shakes in, or not worry about it, and just get what protein I get from whole foods. Keeping the protein shakes in, would be part of those 1500-1700 calories pf course. I don't mean 1500-1700 cals of food, plus shakes. As for the going back and forth with people in my posts, I always have that problem. Usually because most don't understand where I am coming from. they don't realize what I do is bodybuilding, not typical dieting just to lose weight. I started off doing whatever I could to lose weight, then caught the bodybuilding bug. I now concentrate on building lean muscle mass as my priority. Some agree and disagree, but I have chosen to do the bulking and cutting phase, like a lot of pro bodybuilders. Since starting my whole program a year ago, I have gained quite a bit of muscle, and have lost 64 pounds, 8 of which I gained back due to my calorie increase, and using creatine, which makes you retain water.

I understood what you meat. What I was saying is that I would keep them in and it might make it easier to stay within your calorie range because they would make you feel full. Also, I don't think it matters where to get the protein as long as you get it and stay within your range.

Ok, well I take 2 a day right now, and they don't make me feel full at all. I take one during the day at work, and one immediatley after I work out, and it just gets sucked right up!

Tom Venuto says:

Protein nutrition is very simple: For practical muscle-building purposes, the important thing is to consume between 25-50 grams of complete protein (depending on your needs) every three hours. Whether it comes from whey isolate, whey concentrate, casein, egg whites, chicken, fish, lean red meat or whatever – if it’s a complete protein, I just don’t think it matters that much.

Just found this website earlier and it has alot of good stuff you might be interested in. I think I got to his aritcles from femalemuscle.com

I am not a body builder, but a vegetarian so I have educated myself quite a bit on different protein sources and have experimented with most of them. Try using protein powder and creating your own protein shakes with fruit and fruit juice. This allows you to leave out alot of the dairy fat that normally comes with pre-packaged protein shakes. You can also add this type of protein powder to other foods to supplement. I also find that having a protein smoothie in the morning keeps me from getting hungry before lunch. Protein is essential in keeping your blood sugar from dipping rapidly because it takes longer for your body to process it.

I use rice protein and find that I like it better than whey or soy. Watch some whey proteins because they can have alot of cholesterol. I bought one from GNC that one serving had 37% of the recommended cholesterol intake for one day before I realized it. I would also look for protein supplements rather than meal replacements because they tend to have less calories.
