 Curious thought about Lays

Whe you buy the individual package, it of course is only one serving and has 130 cals.

BUT, if you buy the big back it says one serving is about 11 chips I think - and is 110 cals.

Why would they put more in the individual bag?

That's interesting. Maybe they want the big bag to look like less calories (to those who do not read serving sizes) so people will buy the more expensive bag?? I don't know but I do know I have to buy the small bag b/c I have a hard time eating 1 serving.

I'll be interested on hearing other theories on this one.

i don't think many people would buy a bag that only had 11 chips in it.... although I don't know why they change it for the big bag... lol

 How "serving size" is determined

I've always wondered about the exact details on this subject, too, so I looked it up today. Apparently, "serving size" is based on consumer surveys and FDA regs and guidelines. Here's a website that explains it all in nearly impenetrable bureaucratese:

http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/qa-lab18.html

Based on my experience in advertising (I used to work for an ad agency whose biggest client was McDonald's), my guess is that (1) there has been a lot of market research by the food producer as to what size of bag consumers are most likely to purchase for an individual serving, and the 130-calorie size bags came out as the consumer favorites, and (2) when you have a smaller bag of chips meant for one person, the average consumer is going to eat all the bag, simply to finish it off, whereas they would probably eat less if the bag was larger and meant to last for more than one meal.

So, basically, serving size is based on what the average person will purchase and eat in a given circumstance.
