 Crunchy grindy knees

Not good! On a trip to the Doctor I find I apparently have a very lax or torn medial lateral ligament of the knee which has made the knee very unstable and therefore the bones are more in contact with eachother. X-ray later today to check if there are any fractures and to check the cartilage. Also on synflex pain killers and have been told to exercise the quads but only the last 30 degrees of that manoevre and not to fully flex the knee..kind of isometic. I'll see the physio on Monday and find out what I can fget away with, but at this stage I am just hoping that the ligament is lax and not torn. The procedure to check what is happening is something like an arthroscope--sticks a camera in to check around and look inside...hopefully that ain;t going to happen.

Anyone else had this problem. I had injury about two months ago going down a pot hole in the lawn when getting out of the car at my Mother's place and suspect I either tore it then and it has gradually gotten worse with time.

Actually, if you have what I think you do, I did that myself when I was 15. I was told that my knee would never be the same, nor heal properly (to be fair to my docs this WAS nearly 17 years ago). I would always be at risk of re-injury. I continued dancing on it (my passion at that time. . and now, though my size AND my knee prevent it), I have indeed re-injured it, repeatedly. I have done weight lifting. Squatting is out. . . for the most part. Leg extensions can be done, through the full range of motion) but I have to be careful to #1: not over compensate with the other leg, and #2: not put too much stress on it or HELLO PAIN. I know what you mean about crunchy, grindy knees. . .its not fun. . .and no one likes to rest their hand on that knee if I move it. Good luck with your treatments. . I hope you get a better deal than I did, thank goodness for medical advancements. : )

On crutches at the mo and see the physio tomorrow for an assessment. Had an x-ray and it showed nothing. Now need an MRI scan to check the soft tissue and cartilage. The swelling as subsided and it just aches towards the end of the day, but on the whole it is much better for the crutches and the rest. It's the medial collateral ligament that seems most tender at the moment and the Pateller tendon seems to have copped it too. No pain in the region of the lateral collateral ligament whatsoever. I think possibly (hopefully) the mcl was a little lax due to the initial injury and that with all the stress this has put stress on all the other ligaments in the knee and the tendons and cartilage. Apparently if you follow physio and religiously rehab your knee you should be fine if they were just sprains--so here's hoping. Hopefully will get fitted for a knee hinged knee brace tomorrow as today has been a big improvement on it and I think it will respind well to bracing and physio.

In highschool I did amateur bodybuilding...and I found out my knees were the pits after one too many sets of squats. I developed water on the knee and had a lovely extraction procedure done to remove the bubble. I have so much noise coming from my knees, I could never sneak up on anyone. They crunch so loud someone would think I was chewing on cement!

I have bad cartilage between the knee cap and bone. That is what dr. said about 12 years ago. I haven't had anyone look at them since. I just adjust my workouts around them. Some days they are really bad and hurt...others, I feel fine...so hopefully I am not damaging them.

So you're in crutches you say???...that bites...well I was in them when I fractured my foot in 7 places too...I was a kid then...playing skipping and I jumped in wrong ..(on the side of my foot) and if that wasn't bad enough my (heavy) friend jumped in after me...RIGHT ON MY FOOT! and if THAT wasn't bad enough, when I told the teacher on duty my foot was hurting she told me to run around on it to loosen it up a bit...so I did...Hence...7 fractures... I wore a cast for 3 months! To this day I have arthritis in it and it pains in damp weather.

Hope you're up and on those knees soon. Get better!
