Well I wouldn't think it would matter as long as you're not tugging on your head. Some people even cross their arms over their chest or reach forward with their fingertips to touch their knees. Just make sure you're not applying pressure to your head or else your abs won't be doing all the work. However, when you are doing the cross crunches where your elbow is suppose to touch the opposite leg, I would think it would be better to hold them out instead of in front of you. Hope this helps =)
Take Care,
Tracy

When I do them, I make sure my elbows stay back because that seems to keep me from pulling on my neck rather than using my torso to pull myself in.

When I hold them away, my neck hurts and I don't feel it in my abs. But when I hold them to my head elbows to my knees it really burns my abs after a bit. I'm glad that either way is ok, thanks =)

Well, I keep my elbows spread because I find that when the crunches get tough that if my elbows are pointing forward I tend to want to pull my neck up with my arms, thus taking away from my crunch. With elbows spread, you're really forced to keep good form and do the crunch right. Just my two cents worth.
Cheers,
Luna :))

if ur getting pain in ur neck or back when doing crunches, heres a tip: fix your eyes on a part of the roof and throughout the movement dont take your eyes of this spot...your head will follow this nature and u wont feel pain from lax form.
