I just got back from my annual doctor's exam (fun, fun) and she was thrilled with my weight loss. I told her I wanted to get down to 120 and she got this weird look on her face, whipped out her little BMI circle chart thing and told me that she would be happy if I got down to 138! That would mean I only need to lose 9 more pounds to be at what she considers a healthy weight. However, my trainer (who is also my sister) wants me down to 120...ugh...who am I supposed to listen to??? The person with the medical degree who sees me once a year or the size 2 sister who sees me on a weekly basis!!
This is really more of a "venting" post than anything but if you guys have any suggestions, I'm more than willing to listen ;) Thanks!!

Go to this web site and tell us what it says your healthy weight should be according to your info (age, height, gender, ect.) it will give you a range saying that a healthy weight for you should be between X lbs to X lbs.

Being too underweight is not good just like being too overweight, but maybe 120 to 138 might be in your healthy range.
Once you see what that web site says your healthy weight range should be, let us know here, and also print out a copy to show your doctor, I believe that your doctor has your health in mind but perhaps she did not factor in all the things that that web page does, well, check it out and we'll see what it says and how it compares to what your doctor and trainer said.

According to the web site, my range is 108 to 132...I don't think I have a snowballs chance of getting to 108, even if I did, I think it would be very difficult to maintain.

hi
everyone been away so not posted for ages
I have just been on the website recommended by Gary: so funny it is tell me that my ideal weight range is 90-110lbs i find that really funny. I am losing weight but i thinki f i got below 115 (my goal weight) i would look ill
MBAgirl if i were you i would aim for the doctors recomended weight and then then assess the situation. You never know you may be over the moon with the the way you look at that weight if not well perhaps think about aiming for the trainers advised weight

Well, your trainer said 120 and your doctor said 138,
and the range from that web site said 108 to 132,
so the middle point of 108 to 132 is 120.
So print out a copy of that page and show it to your doctor
and maybe she might then agree that 120 would be acceptable,
if not then perhaps she would meet you halfway and agree
to 129 (the halfway point between 120 and 138)
and that she can give you a check up at 129 and then see
if it would be ok with her to go to 120 then, because she
knows your health first hand and I know you would feel
better with her medical approval.
....just an idea :-)

...well, no site is going to always be 100% right on,
so you might be ok at 115, once you get there you
should be able to tell then.

Thanks for the suggestions Gary and Marie Clair! I think between 120 and 130 would be good for me given my frame size and build...my sister/trainer might just have to back off! LOL

I would think that if the Dr. tells you that 138 would be a good weight for you then it should be. Most doctors go for the lower weight. Some people who are really small think that everyone should be really small. That could be the problem with your sister. My suggestion would be to get to the size that you are comfortable with, not what everyone else is comfortable with.

When I last went to my doctor, and mentioned that I wanted to get my weight down even further, she asked "Why?" At that point, in the mid-150's, I was well within healthy range for my height, so I think the question was a fair one. The answer is "aesthetics." I like the way I look when I am more slender than I am now. Another reason is that any amount of weight I can take off my bad knees should help. Also, at around 140-145 was where I maintained through most of my adult life, and I feel more like "me" at that weight.
I think that doctors tend to look at weight solely as a health factor, and given the fact that so many patients are overweight these days, a doctor is reluctant to advise a formerly fat patient, such as myself, to try to get down even lower once they are in the healthy range, for fear of triggering frustration which might lead to regaining weight. Long-term weight loss success stories are relatively rare, apparently, especially when you're talking about a lot of weight, and doctors are painfully aware of this.
So I think the answer is that your doctor is viewing your weight in terms of your health, and others may be viewing it in terms of appearance. I think that once you're in the healthy range, your personal preference (not someone else's) as to your appearance should be the deciding factor in whether or not you lose more.

I checked this site out *by the way--thanks!* Anyway, I tried to put in my 40% Protein, 30% Fat, and 30% Carbs and it wouldn't take it. They said you should be taking in about 15% protein? That's pretty low...and it wouldn't even take anything about the 15% protein. What do you think about that?

I tried your % and it came back with -
Unreasonable calorie distribution for protein percent (range is 10 - 20 percent)
Unreasonable calorie distribution for carbohydrate percent (range is 40 - 80 percent)
So it will let you go up to 20% for protein, but I guess it is determined to keep you within what they believe is a healthy percentage for each catagory.
I think I usually input Calorie distribution:
Fat 25 percent
Protein 15 percent
Carbohydrate 60 percent
