 Confession and question

Well, I'm going to admit it: I'm a vegetarian and have been for the past 26 years.

My question: does anyone have any experience with iron supplements? I have never taken them, though I have heard they are hard on the body and can cause constipation.

The reason I ask is that yesterday, for the first time in my life, I went to a local blood drive to donate and they told me that though my blood is fine and I'm not anemic, it was .5 below the level they needed. (I'm 12 and they need 12.5...my sister, who eats poultry and fish, tested at 11.5.)

I'm determined to try again after my 56 day waiting period, and since I already eat quite a lot of dark greens, I thought I might try supplements. I'd appreciate any input from anyone who knows about iron supplements. Thanks.

You can buy them over the counter at drug stores or walmart. Be carefull when you take them they can cause severe constipation which results in stomach cramps and all. I have problems with my iron, but I only take them once or twice a week to keep from having all those problems. Also if you take a multi vitamin they usually have iron in them, so do not take the iron sup. if you are taking a multi vitamin too. I like One Source personally. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure if this would help, but I take a woman's vitamin that has added iron because of the amount of iron we loose every month. I'm not sure how much extra but it's the one-a-day for women.

I'm not sure about the iron supplements, sorry. I'll step aside & let someone with more experience field that one.

I was borderline iron deficient with my first pregnancy. Believe it or not, my doctor suggested using Cast Iron cookware to add additional iron into my diet, as well as add more food rich in calcium. The calcium apparently help with the absorption of some types of iron. I have a really touchy stomach so iron supplements were just not an option for me, but these suggestions seemed to work in my case :) Good luck to you!

Hi, since you want to ncrease your iron level, here is natural way of getting more..Molasses is an excellent source of Iron...It is a natural sweetner and can be use it many recipes...I usually add some to my smoothies..if you find the taste strong just start by using a little at a time...It is also easy to use in many vegetarian recipes. As a sweetener it has way more nutrients then honey...I would recommend that you do a search on the web for more info on molasses and it`s nutrition...hope this helps..G

Thanks everyone. I hadn't thought of molasses! And yes, I've heard of the cast iron cookware...in fact, that's what we use, and it probably helps my iron level.

I have always had low iron. I did the vegan thing too. It was healthier, and my weigth stayed in check. To be honest I take prenatal vitamins that you buy right over the counter. I also cook all my spagetti sauces in castiron pots.
