Ok...I am a compulsive eater. I eat for no reason...even when I'm full. I would say I have an eating disorder...but I've never heard of one that doesn't involve being too thin...so weighing 350 pounds apparently does not count as one. Anyway...I eat and eat...and only seem to stop when I am so full that I am in physical pain. Emotional pain too...cuz every time I get to that point..I get so depressed I don't know what to do with myself. My question is this: Will hypnotism work to curtail this behavior? I remember when I was a kid, my mother used to say she was going to take me to get hypnotized. Back then, it was the craze I guess. Now I find myself wondering if it works. I can diet for a little while. I do allright. Actually, I seem to lose weight very quickly when I put my mind to it. Then I fall off the wagon, and once I do...it snowballs. I thought about getting gastric bypass...but it seems pointless when I can't fight the urge to overeat to the point of pain. doing that once you have the surgery can result in serious complications. If anyoneknows anything about hypnotism for dieting, please let me know. Also, if anyone is looking for an email buddy to support and get support from while dieting...please contact me. Thanks and God Bless.
May God bless and keep you always. May your wishes all come true. May you always do for others and let others do for you. May you build a ladder to the sky, and climb on every wrung. And, may you stay....forever young.

If you feel you have an eating disorder, then you probably do. Just like AA meetings, they have overeaters anonymous. Overeating is just as unhealthy and serious as undereating! I don't know anything about hypnosis so I can't help you there, but I would suggest getting help. You sound to me that you have emotional issues. I'm not passing judgment only sympathizing. I too had things going on in my life that I wasn't really aware of. I would eat untill I was physicaly sore trying to stuff the pain down and fill a void in my life....It's just like wrapping up in a warm blanket, so comforting. ....You are probably using food as a medication for your problems. And just like any illness, you can't stop taking the medication until you cure the problem.
Read Dr. Phil's book, it deals with all that.
If you'd like to e-mail me, please do. I'm 26, married and mother of 3!

Overeating to that extent is -for sure- an eating disorder.
As far as hypnotism goes, I don't think it can do any -harm-, but I wouldn't get your hopes up that it will work like some sort of miracle. You might even want to consider regular therapy, and also seeing a nutritionist, to get to the root of the problem. Even if hypnotism works, that's one thing it won't do.
I do know that it can work as a placebo, wherein people attend the seminar and really -want- it to work (plus get their money's worth), and they do see results. But really, I doubt that on the whole the results are particularly great.

I have a friend who took this route and it did not work for her. Along with the hypnotism she was given a little counseling and a diet plan to follow. I think there might have been tapes involved for her to listen to at home.
She went back several times and most of the time spent there was in a group talking about nutrition and how she must alter her eating habits in order to lose weight.
Wouldn't it be nice if you could just go somewhere, they hypnotize you, telling you that you only want "healthy" things to eat and that solved the problem.
But..........maybe someone here knows of such a person who had these results. I think I would do it in a heart beat!!

Skre,
Sorry you are in so much pain.
I agree with Emily, that you should consider regular therapy for your eating disorder. What you described appears to be so much more serious than just a mild case of stress-overeating that can be cured with a little hocus-pocus.
I also think it is a good idea to check out Dr Phil's book. It addresses issues like yours; maybe you will recognize yourself among the pages and take steps to cure what is the root cause of your disorder. Maybe something will click and you will be able to work it through by yourself.
I think Hypnotism is no different than all the other "scams" out there for QUICK, EASY weight removal--it is not a permanent fix. The only way to remove the weight and KEEP IT OFF is to first accept the fact that you need to make a lifestyle change to a healthy way of eating and exercising for LIFE, and then doing the work involved to make it happen.

Dear SkrewzieQ, Are you sure you don't eat out of depression? Sometimes antidepressants can help. I would also check to see if you have a local chapter for Over Eaters Anomyous (can't spell). I also like a book by Bob Schwartz called "Diets Don't Work"....He also has a new book called "Diets Still Don't Work". His books have been best sellers, and teach a person how to slow down and really taste and enjoy your food instead of stuffing yourself to the gills. You really don't enjoy the food any more when you are shoveling it in to the point of pain. His book "Diets Don't Work" really helped me to stop binging. His books will help you to find out why you stuff yourself. Can get these at Amazon.com. Self analysis is a key to find the real cause of your problem so that you can heal the ailing part of your mind that is causing you to be so destructive to yourself.
Also, I started taking antidepressants about 15 years ago and stop binging after starting these. The one I take is called nortriptyline, but there are a lot of others. Everybody's body reacts better to different types, so a person may need to try different ones until one helps. I don't know if depression is your problem, but it is a problem at the root of lots of eating dissorders (anorexia and overeating) and alcoholics also. Also, finding better outlets in your life like new hobbies, new relationships, pets, join a gym, get new career training etc. can help to get ones life going in a new and better direction instead of focusing on food. Some people also can find help in religion. You must find your own way.
I think hypnosis can only help a little, but you need to try the other things I mentioned too. Good luck, Lesley
