Hi everyone!!
I am new to the site. Just to give you a brief background of me. I am a 19(soon to be 20) yr.old college student. I am overweight. However, most of my weight is found in my chest. This is taking me a lot of courage to do this. I have tried working out but the more I work out the more I eat. My dad owns a bakery which not only serves pastries and other sweets but during the summer we serve italian ice (kind of like ice cream). It would be a lot easier to resist if I wasn't there all the time but I work 3 days a week and I come from school usually starved. I am posting this message because I am looking for different suggestions on how people lost weight who may have been in the same situation as me. If no one is, I still would enjoy hearing different motivational ways to lose weight. I have very little motivation because I don't see instant results. My cousin is getting married on July 6th of this year and I am hoping to lose some weight before then. If anyone has any suggestions, they will be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to email me whenever with some advice. My email address is bubblz816@aol.com.
Thanking you all in advance,
Paulette :o)

Hi Paulette. First of all lets say good job making the first step in asking for help.
I am very proud of you for that. I have never been in your situation and I hope someone else replys to your message who may be able to help you more. I think you need to start some sort of new routine. Like making sure you eat before going to work. Even if that means just an apple to eat on the way then when you get there you won't feel as starved. Do you exercise at all? Maybe you could start doing some exercises that will help you out. Start slow and work up. You've made the first step and now you have to continue the journey. Believe in yourself. I believe in you. keep me posted.

I have never had the pleasure of working in a bakery, but I have been in situations where I've been around a lot of food, and what's worked for me is to allow myself just a taste--like one tablespoon--of the stuff I absolutely can't resist, and then wait a bit. I almost always find that this satisfies me. A lot of little tastes do add up, which you have to keep in mind, but it's better than bingeing (sp?), and it's a good way to ease into general abstinence, which should be your ultimate goal. You really have to stick with this method, though, as it takes a few weeks to establish new habits. Once those few weeks have passed, it gets a lot easier.
As far as needing immediate results, I have that problem too, and what's worked for me is setting short-term goals and concentrating on them. You might start with a goal of five pounds in one month, for instance.
Hope this helps.

Gee, I've been where you are... only it wasn't a bakery, it was a pizza joint and the owners loved to feed their staff several times in a shift.
I found that one taste always lead to another and another so it was easier not to eat anything at all.
You MUST eat before you go to work. Pack some fruit or veggies, a meal bar, or one of those cheese-string sticks with a couple crackers, or a combination of these if you can't fit in a full sandwich or meal before your shift. Eat at least 30 minutes before your shift.
NEXT: arm yourself with a variety of strong mints, gum, hard candy or whatnot for while you are at work. The stronger the better, but the variety stops you from getting bored of the taste. Apple streudle doesn't taste very good mixed with a good strong mint. Some of these mints are very small and dissolve quickly which comes in handy if you aren't allowed to have gum or candy while working.
If you can successfully avoid the tempattions of the bakery, you will then just need to focus on eating healthy foods, in sufficient quantities to support your body's needs, and exercising 3-5 times a week.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Hey fellow college student here. Yeah eat before you go to work and just tell yourself that you're not going to have any. it's basically just going to come down to you just saying no to these things and making a pact with yourself that you're not going to. i mean once in a while (say every friday or something) you can but other than that think you're allergic or something and just make yourself not eat it. it's hard at first but it's all mental really, this whole weight loss thing... also exercise will help you stay more motivated to not eat crap... if there is a gym at school that helps, but you definitely want to start with those two things -- exercise and not eating at the bakery. after you've mastered that, eating healthier in general and weight lifting and differet types of cardio could be added. but you gotta start somewhere. good luck!

Good point,
When I was working the pizza place, I would deliberately look for food prep stuff that I found gross - usually making the meatballs that came out of the oven nearly submerged in a bath of fat (still makes me gross out). Or I would read the ingrediants on the packaged stuff - like the _contains real mozzarella cheese_ label on the bag of shredded cheese (heh heh - pure mozzarella isnt really that stringy, its the filler that makes it really stretch).
These self-mind tricks help to deter you from wanting to eat the goods - though they work much much better when you have eaten beforehand.
Cheers
