I am new to this group. I want to loose about 25-30 pounds. I like to walk but I live in Michigan and it's cold most of the time. I really don't like to walk out in the cold. What should I do?

I would use a tred mill. This way you can alternate using the tred mill on the really cold days and walk outside on the tolerable ones. If you can get one for your house that might be best. Hope this helps.

Donna,
As Lilly said, getting a treadmill is a good idea. I use it 5 times a week. I keep mine in my garage. Also, another option is to buy exercise clothes. I'm sure you have a sporting goods store in Michigan. They have clothes that are designed for different weather conditions. For instance you can get pants and shirts that keep your body heat from escaping. So along with that, a hat and gloves, you'll be fine. Also, once you get going, you warm up pretty fast and the cold won't be an issue anymore.

I live in Canada, and also love to walk, so I know exactly how you feel. I don't walk outside on extremely cold or windy days, as the breath just seems to get sucked right out of you. I also can't afford any of the 'high-tech' fitness clothing right now that is supposed to keep you warm and dry. So, I just bundle up and off I go. I'm always cold when I start out, but I'm soon peeling off scarves, and loosening zippers. The most important thing is appropriate foot gear. I can't walk in running shoes, because I live in the country, and all the roads are packed snow - much too slippery in running shoes. So I wear my boots - they are very comfortable, and do not rub or cause blisters. When it's too cold outside, I haul out my mini-tramp, or put on a fitness video, or some really hot music and dance!

Hi Donna,
I live in Michigan too. I walk 5 miles every night, even when it is cold. Just get some really warm sweat pants, maybe you should wear two pairs, and I layer up with 4 sweaters, a scarf, hat, pair of gloves. It will leave you feeling refreshed!

I don't know if you live near a church with a gym or not, but in my area many churches have them and open them up for the public to walk, play basketball, etc.
