Did any one catch the show on NBC last night about the 6 or 7 people that were losing weight before their 25th? class reunion? I did not catch the first show, saw part of an update, and then last night only caught part of the follow up with the people several months after the reunion.
Each one was using a different way of losing weight; Atkins, exercise, Weight Watchers etc. What was dissapointing was that only one of the participants really stuck with a program and was continuing to lose. I'm not sure what her plan was, other than eating right and exercise - a program that seems to work for some of us.
Anyway............. it seems that many people fail at MAINTAINING their weight loss. The program ended with the reporter saying that although losing weight was difficult, keeping the weight off was even harder.
Kind of a downer - the conclusion. Just wondering if anyone else caught the show. There are a few "maintainers" here and your continuing "progress reports" seem to be something we should pay close attention to.

I saw this program.... and thought of all of you.
It was quite interesting. You are right... all of the people had problems with maintaining...but... they all said they couldn't wait to be done with their "diet" I think THAT was the main problem. Not one of them seemed to think of this as a way of life...just something to do to get to the class reunion. So... guess that is a lesson to us all. This IS a new life... if you want to maintain. I am sure maintenance is MUCH harder... That lasts the REST of your life... not just a few months.
I will look forward to another update and see how they are all doing. It was very interesting.
Notice how the two who were doing Weight Watchers... were the one who only gained 3.6 pounds... and the one is still losing.
Weight Watchers is all about changing the way you live... hmmmm....

Kidsmom,
I didn't see the show (darn it); but I think you hit the nail squarely on the head when you said they were all on a "diet" for a specific event; and that removing and KEEPING WEIGHT OFF can only be achieved through a life-long commitment to healthy living.
I cringe when "newbies" on this board write, "In a couple of months, I'm (going on a cruise/going to a family reunion/getting married/etc., etc.); PLEASE help me find a diet where I can lose this weight!!!!
The reason we are overweight is two-fold. First, there the psychological connection to using food as a drug that must be addressed. Then, overeating and non-exercising are habits that must be broken and replaced with healthy habits. It takes time and effort to make, and accept, healthy lifestyle changes.
I'm convinced that the dismal 95% failure rate for weight loss is mostly a result of the people with a "diet" mentality.
I have been giving serious thought to the "maintenance" portion of my lifestyle change for several months. I've come to the conclusion that it's not so much about being "ever vigilant" about every morsel you put in your mouth and jumping on the scale 3 times a day, than it is about moving on to other goals you want to achieve as a healthy and fit person.
Once I get to "goal" I want to close this chapter in my book, much like I closed the chapter of being a "smoker," and move on to bigger and better things as a healthy, fit and active person (read: Diva).

I meant to congratulate you last week on your new life as a nonsmoker also.... that was a HUGE accomplishment. I am one of only three members of my family who do not smoke. My mom, grandmother, brothers, uncles and aunts all smoke. I pray each day that they will quit. I know they would feel much better.
I am WAY looking forward to maintenance... not because I want to give up on all of the changes I have made in my life... but.. .because I want to relax a little about everything that goes in my mouth. I am in that "newbie" phase of being overreactive about my weight... you know.. .weighing myself 3 times a day... entering EVERYTHING I eat into Fitday.com... etc. (i.e. my post below).
I have 79 (roughly... I am shooting for 135-140) more pounds to lose... and I REALLY wanted to be within 15-20 pounds of that by August. I may be shooting for the stars though.

I saw the show and had a different reaction. At first I was thinking how disappointing it was, but then I realized.....the reason they are not successful is because they are "dieting" and not changing their lifestyle. (as previously stated above). The ones doing Atkins, hypnosis, etc., had gained back significant portions of weight. Well, no wonder, you can't eat like that for so long and then go back to your old eating habits and expect to maintain.
I was encouraged by the two ladies doing WW and low calorie/exercise continuing to lose or regaining minimally and then getting back on track. I find that to be consistent with what most all of us know and follow here. Just reiterated to me what needs to be done for real success.

2 of them in my mind were succesful. The WW lady only gained back 3 1/3 lbs which to me could even be water weight in the few months after the reunion. To me that is success.
One of them was down an additional 10 lbs. She was the one that had a motivation coach and logged in to his site and had online diet buddies.
The 4 others gained back some of it but one of the guys had a very bad back injury that made excersise hard and one of them was an atkins guy and you gain weight back fast if you even cheat a little.
I have watched every episode of that from the beginning and I love the updates.
It is interesting to me who has been the most suffessful, I thought the marathon runner woujld be the one to lose the most and keep it off but it was the heaviest one that wasn't married and didn't seem to have much of a support network around her who did the best. You just never know.
