 Cardio question??!!

HI ALL,

Just wanted to know, what's the ideal time for fat burning to kick in during cardio. I heard 30 min, then do strength training. I have also heard to keep cardio and strength training on separate days because they conflict eachother. Please help. THanks

Unfortunately, everyone's metabolism is a little different, so exact times are hard to state. When we do cardio, the body first uses the stored carbohydrates in your muscles for energy, and only when those stores are depleted will the body start to burn fat for energy. Everything I have read says that it takes 15 to 30 minutes for the body to use up the stored carbohydrares, and start burning fat. That means that some people can burn fat after 15 minutes, and can work out for 30 minutes total to lose a bit of weight, whereas other people will not start to burn fat for 30 minutes, so they will need to work out for longer, maybe at least 45 minutes, before they can lose a bit of fat. It doesn't seem fair, but I have found that I hit a weight loss plateau fairly quickly with 30 minutes of cardio, and to get my weight loss moving again, I have to do a continuous cardio session of 45 to 60 minutes every morning. As for whether or not to do cardio and weight training on the same day, I have no idea what professionals do, but I do cardio very early every weekday morning (6 AM to 7 AM) and weight train in the early evening on the same days...upper body weight training on 3 days, and lower body and abs on 2 days. Dunno if this helps, and need to get back to home schooling my kids, so off I go! Cheers, Dee

According to todays new cardio, interval training is the best way to burn fat. You can do it on any cardio machine. I use a treadmill to do my cardio. I do a routine I got from Men's Health magazine. You do a 5 minute warm up gradually increasing to 50% of your max speed. At 5 minutes, you go your max speed for 15 seconds. After 15 seconds, you drop down to 50% max again. You do this for 6-10 sets, then do a cool down at about 25% max for 3 minutes. It takes me 19 minutes and 30 seconds to complete, if I only do 6 sets. I have started to vary a little but using the same basic principal. For instance, at the end of my warm up, instead of doing just max for 15 seconds, I also raise the incline to max incline for the full 15 seconds. I then lower back down after the 15 seconds. Then at the next interval I do just my max for 15 seconds. I alternate this for the full workout. I find that this is better for me, because doing a regular run/walk, is very boring for 20-30 minutes. They also say, you burn more calories than you do if you do a regular cardio routine. You don't burn as many during the actual exercise, but you continue to burn longer afterwards. That is also better for me because I exercise in the evenings after work. Your metabolism starts slowing down later in the day, so I give it a boost before I eat dinner. As for a magic time frame, I think it depends on the person. Most health pro's say 20-30 minutes a day.

This sounds great with me. I get up at 4am and hate every minute of it. I'm back home around 10am - 12pm depending on which day of the week. I could do the dumbbells then and alternate days with upper and lower body workouts when I get back home. I would rather get up at 7am if I could. I function much better at that time. Getting to bed around 9pm has not worked for me yet. I do not like stress to get to me and if I'm at all stressed it is b/c of the lack of sleep. It makes me forget things and stress is not a healthy way in losing weight. Stress can really take a toll on someones body. Just think of tearing all that muscle and not giving it any nutrients to replace what it has lost. One of these days my routine will get in line and I will feel confident about it.

Derrick is on the money, interval training is the way to go..be advised after around 20 minutes a substance called cortisol is released into the body...its main 'action' is to get more energy for you to 'burn'...some comes from fat and some comes from muscle protein...cortisol has no favourites to which it goes to to keep you going, but it seems cortisol actually favours muscle protein as a source of fuel for intenser exercises for more than 20 minutes...so if u do go above this for harder cardio training, be advised you may lose some muscle protein in the process....either way you should always supplement after cardio the same you do with weights..that is glutamine (if u desire), glucose (sugary stuff..the yummy stuff usually!) and protein....down it straight after cardio, it will replenish lost glycogen stores and 're-arm' the body....dont think the glucose u ingest (wether it be lollies or what not) will go to fat storage, it will be utilised more efficiently by the body post cardio...and that afterburn is called the EPOC system for anyone interested...whilst interval training may burn 200 calories for example in 20 minutes, a mild jog can burn 400 calories in 45 mins...HOWEVER your body doesnt expend alot of energy after that jog to bring you back to normal, but in the case of interval training you can burn another 400 calories due to its metabolsim ass kicking effects...it really amps your metabolism...your body will only condition itself to how you train it....what look do you like better? a skinny marathon runner or a 100 metre sprinter?...its that sort of 'i just whipped my own ass' training that gets you there!!....by the way, give it a try for a week but start slow and careful, it is a kick in the guts but well worth it!

On your question about doing cardio and weights on the same day -

I do not think that there is necessarily a conflict in doing both on the same session, except for the fact that one or the other, whichever one you do first, will tire you out enough so that you do not get to maximize the potential of the other.

Articles I have read suggest that if you have to do them together, do cardio last.
