I just got a free pedometer in a box of Special K cereal. It's just a little plastic thing that clips to your waistband with the digital window and a battery. I've been wearing it since I got back from the store at 2:00 PM, and it's now 9:20 PM. It reads 5582 steps.
My question to you all is: are these gadgets accurate? I see them on Amazon for $23.00, but this one was free. Is there a difference? Sorry for my ignorance, but this is the first time I've had one of these things and I'm just wondering if I can believe what it says.

Hi Nancy, before i bought the cereal for the pedometer I did a review search by asking at the chatelaine forum and checking it on the web and found out the one that comes with the cereal is not always the most acurate....This info came from various people and one was from a couple who both tried one at the same time and after walking 3 miles one pedometer said the husband had walk 300 steps and the wife had walked 4000+ steps..
The one I have been using for the last year and half is quite acurate within a couple of steps and it was purchase at Wal-Mart here in Canada for between 15-20 dollars (my kids and hubby bought it) I think it`s a body break make (no longer have the packaging)...Hope this helps...G
(p/s OT I`m still here cause my camping trip got delayed from my power door locks failing again so we can`t finish packing the van through the rear doors who cannot be opened! The dealership fixed that problem 1 week ago@!!!!!!)

Thanks for the info, G. I think I'll check out the Wal-mart brand.
Have fun on your camping trip. We're leaving tomorrow for the wilds of New Brunswick.

You might want to check out heart rate monitors instead. A pedometer does not do much in the way of information. How many calories do you burn in how many steps? A heart rate monitor is a little more expensive, but it can give you an accurate reading of the effort used in exercising.

yeah, you don't have to spend 23 bucks, but walk 20 steps and see what it says. I think paying at least 5 or 6 bucks is a good idea, because then they come with instructions on how to program them for how long your stride is...
