Can calorie reduction have an effect...

On you when you are under the weather ?.
Last night i went to the gym, but i felt really weak. I did three mileson the tredmill after working with weights for my legs and chest, but i felt really tired and out of wind. Afterwards, when i went to work, i started to develope acough and the start of a cold/Bronchitis.

I was wondering if it might be better to stay away from working out while i have it, or maybe just going there to use the steam sauna or whirlpool. Some advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't wanna overdue it, but i also don't want to be down for 3 or 4 days either. What is better forme to do cause i really do not know.

Thanks, Ron.

As a veteran of innumerable bouts of upper respiratory infections, I think you can be pretty sure that your fatigue is caused by the illness, and not the calorie reduction. It's generally advised that you not engage in strenuous exercise while you have a URI, as your body needs lots of rest to recover, but a sauna or whirlpool would probably be good for you--anything hot and steamy will help the congestion and maybe even help loosen up all the mucous (sp?) and discharge the illness leaves in your chest and head so you can get it out of your system faster. Hope you feel better soon.

Hey Ron, I am just getting over the same thing. Today is the frst day in a week that I could actually do anything. My body pretty much told me to back off the exercise with the weakness. I tried one day but after about 10 minutes I felt like I would faint, it's not worth it to risk your recovery...taking a few days off is fine.

I still ate under my calorie limit and worked hot chocolate into the mix which reallly helped loosen my chest up.

Ron,

try not to push it too much. Especially if you think you might develop bronchitis. If you get bronchitis you will be out not just days but possibly weeks. it is a safer bet to relax for 3-5 days and see how you feel. Just keep your calories in check so you can maintain your current weight.

just drink some tea, and keep it easy and simple until you feel better.

if you feel you MUST work out, then keep it very light. Maybe just walk on the treadmill at a light pace. I would not do this outside (depending on where you live) because the cold weather could further enhance your cold/bronchitis.

But I highly recommend just resting and letting the cold subside.

i would ease off the workouts for a while...if your coming down with a virus then all you need is rest rest rest...i would eat maintanance cals since your body needs energy to fight infection (so being in cal restriction would probably take you longer to get over the flu/bronchitis) and would NOT go near a sauna...to clear congestion, use the towel over the head in a hot bowl of steaming water and add a few drops of eucalyptus oil in there....the reason i say not to go to the sauna is because it dehydrates your whole body too much...you need a shitload of fluids right now...so drink tonnes of water, stay rested and eat maintanance cals (keep a close eye on this part)....it leaves you in a temporary stall, but you will get over it 10 times quicker than if you tried to exercise (which isnt worth doing when you cant run as far/lift as much etc anyway) and eat in a heavy cal restriction.

I'm going to go a bit against the grain here and suggest fresh air. Take a walk outside occassionally. Amen to the fluids. Lots of water. I like green tea too.
