When it's extremely hot out I tend to get swelling in my hands and feet, at least that's where I notice it the most. I have noticed that swining my arms and opening and closing my hands helps with the puffiness in my hands. My feet....well I don't know what to do for those. Drinking lots of water is good. I suppose if you're real out of shape that a 1 mile walk could be painful. Maybe you should work up to the mile a little more slowly.
About the blisters, you're stuck until they heal. You could cover them with bandaids and wear better shoes, but don't do that unti they heal a bit or you'll open them up and increase the chance for infection. Make sure that you wear proper shoes for walking. My husband go blisters when he came walking with me 2 days ago. He work loafer type shoes with no socks. I warned him, but did he listen.....no.

you could wear double socks. I know that when I played basketball I would double up my socks or else I would get lots of blisters from all the sprints and running.
