 Agree/Disagree

It seems as though we have touched some nerves about this Atkins diet! I for one disagree with it. I think we all know you can't eat a bunch of white rice, bread, and potatoes and lose weight. I do believe they are needed in smaller amounts though. I eat brown rice, whole wheat bread, and a baked potato at least once a week on different days. I also eat various types of beans a few times a week. As for meats, I eat salmon, tuna, boneless skinless chic breast, and ground turkey every single week. The veggies I eat are broccoli, asparagus, green beans, squash, lettuce and collards. In the past 7 months that I have changed my eating habits and started exercising, I have lost 54 lbs. I have never once figured out what percentage of anything I eat. My main meals always consist of lean meat, and 2 veggies. I sub 1 veg for either, brown rice, beans, or a 1/2 baked potato once a day. I also exercise 5 days a week. Now doing this has me feeling the best I've felt in my life overall. I have even gained some muscle weight along the way, and lost a lot of body fat. So, I could care less what NEW diet comes out. I did this on my own. When I started this, my main goal was to lose weight. Secondly, I wanted to create good eating habits for the rest of my life. And third, I wanted to gain some muscle and be in good physical condition. All of the things I have done, have me heading in the right direction. Any diet that doesn't suggest exercise, is one I would question. Think about the Atkins diet again. It is simply a quick way to lose weight without exercise. That is why people go for it. Sure you have some people who exercise, but the diet itself doesn't promote it. It's a diet for lazy people as GymMac said! Our bodies are made to be active, not sedentary!

Another thing someone said for people who are really heavy. They said something about not exercising. Well, I think you can do some form of exercise no matter what your size. It may not be to the extent of others, but unless you are bed ridden, or have some other physical ailment, you can do something. I do believe with all beginning dieters you should take everything slow. Don't get that confused though. I mean don't just dive head first. Start out making gradual changes to your diet, as well as exercise. Walking is one of the best things you can do, and anyone can do it. You may not be able to walk far if your extremly heavy, but you can start and increase slowly as the weight comes off.

Don't ever look for me to advocate or suggest any NEW diets that come out. I also don't suggest weight loss pills or fat burners. I believe we all can lose weight healthy and permanant without all of those fad things. I challenge anyone to this! Eat a balanced diet consisting of only lean meats, veggies, fruits, and whole grains. Exercise 3-5 days a week. Do at least 3 days of hard cardio, such as interval training. Also do weight training 2 days a week. I guarantee you will lose weight, and get into great physical condition, with no adverse side effects!

I tottally agree, before I gained all this weight I had good eating habits! I gained 75lbs having my baby, (because I ate too much icecream LOL) I am now trying to lose it.keeping at it is the key alot of people fall off the wagon and don't get back on, we all must be diligent in this quest for a healthier self. I have slipped up but I am going to keep trying.

I agree with Derrick.

I think Atkins diet, or any other "diet" that restricts certain food groups is unhealthy, especially over long term.

I also keep hearing how a very large percentage of people who lost weight on Atkins-type diets gained the weight back, and some more.

And regarding the "caveman" (Paleolithic) diets - well, in those days the average life expectancy was 30-35 years old... enough said.

I believe in a balanced diet that is low in fat and includes lean meats, lots of fruits and vegetables, and whole grains. That's the way I eat, I never restricted carbohydrates, and I lost weight, and now maintain my ideal weight.

Best regards,

Melanie

I CERTAINLY AGREE, SEVERAL YRS AGO I LOST WEIGHT GOING TO WEIGHT LOSS CENTER. I COULD NOT EAT CERTAIN FOODS, INCLUDING SOME FRUITS & VEGGIES. I ALSO HAD TO EAT THEIR
'HEALTHY BARS" TWICE A DAY. AS I STARTED TO ADD THE FORBIDDEN FOODS BACK TO MY DIET AND STOPPED THE BARS THE LBS. STARTED CREEPING UP. EVENTUALLY ALL!! THAT WAS HOW I LEARNED TO EAT ALL HEALTHY FOODS IN MODERATION AND EXERCISE. WHICH I DIDN'T NOT HAVE DO ON THE DIET. FINDING EATING HABITS & EXERCISE IS THE ONY WAY, IN MY BOOK.

I keep hearing about this "caveman" diet. And how it's like Atkins and they never had heart disease etc. I'd just like to say that first the meat they ate was wild; deer, bear, buffalo not the grain-fed-hormone-pumped-grossly-overweight cows that we get now which contain way more saturated fat. And secondly people ate vegetables they ate nuts and seeds and whatever plants were common to their area. So to say they were on a similar diet as Atkins is silly.

Also the % of overweight people in this country has only gone up in the last 50 years or so and if we look back this is also when fast food (and I dont just mean Mcdonalds but also quick prossesed foods in the supermarket) became readily available and we started getting more and more 2 income families who were short on time. Now we live in an age where families eat out 4+ times per week, and if they do eat at home its chicken in a box they make. No wonder 60% of Americans have big butt!

All that aside, I think everyone should decide what is best for them. However; I would caution people wanting to start any restrictive diet to have a check-up first. I say this because my father did the Atkins diet but because of a medical problem he didn't know about it almost killed him.

As a last thought, I would be curious to hear back from the Atkins fanatics in a year to see not only how much they lost but also (and most important) if it is still gone.

i agree with derrick too!!! the atkins diet is a fad diet and i really think it would be hard to stay on forever. a lady that lives down the street from me did it, lost weight and got off the routine! now she's back where she started from! in order to loose weight i honestly don't think dieting is necessary... it's all about the lifestyle changeand fueling your body properly!!! also, i don't think carbs are bad!!!! they are a macronutrient which our body uses as the first source of energy.... i think the weight and carbs idea really depends on the source of carbs and how much a person consumes! i for one have switched to whole grains and brown rice and have learned not to eat carbs at every single meal:)

The caveman diet is different in one VERY important aspect. All of the animals eaten 40 000 ya were high in poly/monounsaturated fats and low in sat. fats. Therefore, yes, the paleolithic diet was good. It is wrong to assume tat the eat no carbs. Fruit and underground tubers as well as some sea vegetables were consumed. There is alot of info on paleolithic carbs, do a search on isotopic analysis/nutrition/epoch of your choice.
