Advice needed - what do you do?

What do you do when you don't know how many calories is in something?

With most of my foods, I know what the calorie counts are, from store-bought products to restaurant items (thanks to Calorie King) because I just enter in the information from the package. But what do you do when you make a meal and have absolutely no idea what the calorie count is? For example, I'm making myself some homemade vegetable-bean soup to keep around for my lunches the next 2 or 3 days (bunch of different types of beans with carrots, celery, corn and zucchini thrown in) and I have NO clue how many calories it's going to have per serving.

Do you just guess? Like I suppose a 2-cup serving of most bean soups are somewhere in the vicinity of 200 calories or so.

Any advice?

If you feel like weighing everything that's going into your soup then this site may help you out.

Look at your ingredient list and estimate the calories in the most calorie rich items. Then add a few calories for the other stuff and round up. When estimating calories in food, I strive to over estimate and for exercise under estimate calories.

I only make this kind of thing on the weekends for this reason. I don't count calories so much on the weekend, but when I do want to know I add up everything separately and divide it from there. This can take several minutes, but my peace of mind is worth it.

Too funny you should say that. I was having the same dilemma. I made some homemade pasta sauce this weekend, and in mine I did eggplants, mushrooms, green peppers and zucchini in a thick tomato sauce, with onions and garlic. OK...so I am going to combine it with a tomato flavored protein soup from Herbalife today for lunch and make an Italian veggie soup. That way I get the protein from the soup and all the veggies too. So, I figured I would to it like this...
1 cup eggplant,
1 cup zucchini,
1 cup bell pepper,
1 cup diced tomatoes...

I think that's what I'll do, just add up the calories for each individual item. A tedious task, I'm sure, because once I do that I'll still have no idea about portion-sizing each ingredient.

jeez, maybe I'll just forget the whole thing and estimate how many calories will be in a cup. For a meal I usually eat 2 cups. I have a special soup bowl that I use that measures out exactly 2 cups of soup and it's perfect for one meal.

This kind of thing drives me crazy. What's funny is it didn't used to. But those were also the days that I didn't care what and how much I was putting into my body. Now I keep as close of an eye as possible without going overboard and obsessing over the whole thing.

I make a meal like this a lot and a long time ago I figured out the calories per serving.
What you do is, as you make it you add up all the calories that are going into it. When you add the carrots, say you're putting in 3 carrots chopped up, so go to calorieking and look up the calories for those carrots. Write that down. then figure out your next ingredient.... 2 zucchini about 7" long each, look that up, a cup of this and a cup of that.......Than you have a pot full of, lets say 2000 calories. Then take a ladle or a small measuring cup or even a small bowl and scoop out the soup into another pot. Count how many times it takes to empty the pot. If it's 10 times, then divide that 2000 x 10 and you get 200 calories per serving.
I did this before with a ladle and now whenever I make this meal, I use that same ladle and scoop out a seving, most of the time two! :)

This may take about ten extra minutes when you're making this meal, but once you've done it you will forever know the calorie content of your bean soup!!!
It's well worth it if you ask me!!!

What a great idea! I've copied your idea into a text document to keep on hand and I'll remember to do that next time.

Thanks!
